It started in 1975 as the Broward County Library \"Project for the Economically Disadvantaged\" but soon became internationally known as Library-in-Action Project. The project ran until 2002.","The Von D. Mizell Library in the historic Sistrunk neighborhood, which became part of the Broward County Library system in 1974, was the headquarters of Library-In-Action. As a result of LIA-authored grant funding, four additional libraries were opened: Dania Beach Library (Feb. 5, 1979), Collier City Library (1980), Rock Island Library (1980), and Carver Ranches Library (1982). Also in 1980, the Von D. Mizell Library moved to a new building with a larger collection. These five libraries provided youth and adults with free access to books, literacy classes, and tutoring services. They also created tailor-made services and programs based on community input.","Broward County Library's Assistant Director, Samuel Morrison, hired an administrative team to oversee the LIA program: Tyrone Bryant (Director), Janet Hansen (Assistant Director), and Tanya Simons-Oparah (Outreach Services Coordinator). The LIA team earned millions of dollars in grants, trained librarians and staff, and conducted programming. ","From 1977 to 1980, Library-In-Action staff canvassed neighborhoods and offered library resources to the Collier City community before the Collier City Library was built. The LIA's Homework Assistance program bussed children from elementary schools to the Collier City Library, where they received help with their homework and school projects, graduating more than 200 students in its early years. ","The LIA project also involved a Bookmobile and a Footmobile service - where staff went door-to-door promoting libraries and delivering books. Other notable programs included speakers such as Alex Haley (author of \"Roots\") in 1980, Elton Fox, and Tom Feelings. The Black Heritage program educated children on Africa, and an African hut was constructed in the Von D. Mizell Library as part of the programming.","LIA Director Tyrone Bryant coined the name \"Library-In-Action\". Tyrone Bryant (1942-1988) was a graduate of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University. Prior to his directorship at the Langston Hughes Library he was the director of the Committee for the Corona-East Elmhurst Community Corp, where he began working in 1967. The Committee's activism ultimately formed the Langston Hughes Cultural Center and Library in the Corona neighborhood in New York City. Tyrone Bryant became the first Director of the Langston Hughes Library which opened April 26, 1969 and served the needs of inner-city residents. Bryant moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1975 to become the LIA Director. The many programs conducted during the BCL LIA project originated from Tyrone Byrant's experience with programs at the Langston Hughes Library, such as the Homework Assistance Program. In 1983 Bryant was named Assistant Director of the Broward County Library system in charge of Special Services while also retaining his position as Project Director of LIA. Bryant also served as the chairman of the Sistrunk Historical Festival from 1983 until 1988. He married Claudia Wright in 1986. Tyrone Bryant died on February 24, 1988 at age 45. The Rock Island Library was rededicated in his honor on April 20, 1988 as the Tyrone Bryant Library Branch.","The 1980 Sistrunk Historical Festival saw the dedication of the Von D. Mizell Center which housed the Von D. Mizell Branch Library.","The LIA program collaborated with the City of Fort Lauderdale to create the Sistrunk Historical Festival in 1979, celebrating the county's black pioneers. The festival began as a two-day event to initiate economic redevelopment and held programming on African American culture, and under Bryant's chairmanship grew to a month-long event drawing over 100,000 people by 1988.","This collection received file level processing. Gore (1886-1972) was a newspaper publisher who played a major role in the development of South Florida and served as the 11th Civilian Governor of Puerto Rico from July 1933 to January 1934.","Robert Hayes Gore, Sr. was born in 1886 in Knottsville, Kentucky. His father died when he was at the age of nine, and his mother worked in a pants factory to support her children. After graduating high school, Gore attended the University of Kentucky. He became associated with the Scripps-Howard newspapers in 1907 as a reporter. Gore earned a position as managing editor of the Evansville, Indiana Press before he became the publisher of the Terra Haute Post (Indiana) in 1916. As publisher, he developed his idea for a direct marketing life insurance program, \"giving away\" $1,000 travel life insurance policies with the purchase of a newspaper subscription. Gore left the Terra Haute Post in 1921 after the life insurance-newspaper subscription program became widely successful. Gore founded his own insurance company to function alongside newspaper businesses, the North American Accident Insurance Co., and his insurance-newspaper subscription program was bought by over 1,000 other newspapers. Within a year he was worth millions of dollars, established a publishing house in Terra Haute, and moved the insurance business to Chicago. ","In the spring of 1929, R. H. Gore took a trip to visit a publishing friend in Tampa, and while there received a letter from Tom Stilwell, the owner of the Ft. Lauderdale Daily News concerning his life insurance-newspaper subscription program. Stilwell offered to sell Gore the paper, and Gore bought the Daily News effective April 1, 1929. Shortly after that purchase, Gore split his time between Terra Haute and Fort Lauderdale, and eventually moved to Florida full-time, where he expanded his businesses.","The Fort Lauderdale Daily News was consolidated in 1925 by the Galvin brothers of Ohio from two weekly newspapers, the Fort Lauderdale Herald (founded in 1911) and the Sentinel (founded 1910). They then sold the paper to Stilwell, who sold it to Gore. In 1953, the Gore Publishing Company changed the name of the paper from The Fort Lauderdale Daily News to the Fort Lauderdale News. In March 1960 Gore Publishing purchased the Pompano Beach Sun, a weekly newspaper, and on April 11, 1960 published the first issue of the daily Sun-Sentinel.","During his tenure as managing editor of the Terra Haute Post, Gore became increasingly involved in local and national politics, and wrote novels and newspaper columns. During the 1920 presidential campaign, Gore ran an article in favor of then vice-presidential candidate Franklin Delano Roosevelt predicted Roosevelt would become president. Gore went on to serve as a member of the Democratic National Executive Committee and as finance chairman for FDR's 1932 campaign. In 1933, after securing the presidency, Roosevelt appointed Gore as the Governor of Puerto Rico. Gore arrived at the island in July, and served until he resigned in December 1933, which became effective in 1934. A. Patti was a writer, historian and retired Army lieutenant colonel best known for his work with Ho Chi Minh 1945 and his subsequent 1980 book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross was published in 1980 and became known as a critical work on the study of politics in Asia. Patti passed away in Winter Park in 1998 at age 84 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.","Processed by Alexandra Olsen, April Karlene Anderson and Katie Seeler; finding aid prepared by April Karlene Anderson, Jonathon Teasley and Katie Seeler.
