He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1953. After graduation, Sessums was commissioned as a 2 nd  Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Alabama for three years before returning to the University of Florida to obtain his law degree, which he received in 1958. He grew up in Iron Mountain, MI. Benson was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 as a Technician 5th Grade and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, General Headquarters, United States Army Forces Pacific in the Philippine Islands (PTO) in 1944 and 1946. Benson received his Honorable Discharge on January 18, 1946. After his service, Benson returned to the upper Peninsula of Michigan and attended college at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, where he received a degree in engineering. He worked for Ford Motor Company and then Westinghouse in Lima, Ohio, where he was living during his retirement. Benson married his second wife, Yolanda Benson and moved to Texas until his death.
