A. Patti was a writer, historian and retired Army lieutenant colonel best known for his work with Ho Chi Minh 1945 and his subsequent 1980 book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross was published in 1980 and became known as a critical work on the study of politics in Asia. With no interest from the state in preserving the area, Audubon Florida founded the sanctuary in the mid-1950s. From an initial 5,000 acres, it was expanded to more than 13,000 acres. It is especially notable for its bald cypress forest and cypress domes, the only part of the original Fakahatchee cypress strand in the area to be preserved from logging, which commenced in 1944. As part of the Corkscrew watershed, the sanctuary is part of the western Everglades. To save the remaining cypress and vital habitat from destruction, Audubon led an effort to raise money to buy the property. By 1954, 5,680 acres were accumulated, the last virgin cypress forest in the entire world and the most important Wood Stork rookery in the U.S. When offered the property, the state of Florida expressed no interest in the site, so Audubon took ownership. By the 1970s and 80s, development had altered the local landscape and made the sanctuary a much less isolated site. Under the leadership of Executive Director (and longtime Audubon employee) Ed Carlson in the 1980s and 90s, the sanctuary incoroporated more formal education programs, a visitor center, and a boardwalk that provides a scenic tour of parts of the property. These records document the activities of the sanctuary, including habitat studies, research materials, educational records, correspondence, and general management of the site, from invasive species mitigation to controlled burns.","The Audubon Florida Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Records donation included published book materials that are being processed for inclusion into the collection and will be traced on this record.","This collection consists of organizational papers, scientific data, field notebooks, correspondence, photographs and photographic slides, maps, and clippings.","Maps and publications related to the archival collection are cataloged individually and shelved in the Environment and Natural History Collection. Father Jacob Levine, mother Fanny, and sister Lillian. During the early days of the Great Depression, he, and his older sister, were placed into a children's home because his parents were no longer able to feed them. After the depression ended, he and his sister moved back into the family's apartment and at ten-years-old Seymour began delivering silk ties his father made to business customers which heled support the family. Soon afterwards, his father bought him a cornet which began his life-long musical career. He graduated high school at age sixteen after skipping two grades. ","In 1940, Seymour joined, as a founding member, the New York Post Office Symphony Orchestra playing the cornet. However, his life changed in March, 1941, when he was offered a job with the Federal government in Washington, D.C. ","During the last twenty years of his thirty-three-year career with the Interstate Commerce Commission, a now defunct agency, Seymour composed official correspondence for the agency. Composing was his passion in life –– letters, music, lyrics and, later, musical plays. ","Also, in 1941, Seymour and his fiancé, Shirley Rothbard, secretly married so she can (sic) join him in Washington, D.C. They were officially married three months later with a large, planned wedding in New York City. They had two children and remained happily married until her untimely death from cancer in 1961 when she was thirty-nine years old. ","Seymour wrote his first song titled \"Tappin' Away\" including both the music and lyrics in 1939 and completed his sixty-third song in 1989. While living in Greenbelt, Maryland, from 1941 until mid-1982 (except when he was in the U.S. Army in World War II including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge), he was always busy with music and received many awards with his talent. Seymour joined the Greenbelt Concert Band and was an active member for many years. The two musical plays entitled \"Undershaft\" copyrighted in 1983 and \"David\" copyrighted in 1985, were written while he was living in Pikesville, Maryland. They were the highlights of his life-long hobby and, together, contained twenty-one songs and three poems. From humble beginnings, four generations have built Noble into the business that it is today. William G. Roe, the founder of Noble, began a fresh fruit distributorship in upstate New York. Wanting to be closer to his network of suppliers, he moved his family to Florida and built a packing house next to the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (a common practice in those days). It was at this time his sons, Frederick and Willard, began planting citrus groves, focusing specifically on tangerines. In fact, the first tangerine trees planted were the Dancey. In 1927, the \"Noble®\" name was registered and thus began the packing of only the best tangerines. (Taken from WG Roe and Sons official LinkedIn Profile: Wm. G.
