He graduated in 1913 from the University of St. Petersburg and received his M.D. from the 2nd Medical School, Petrograd in 1917. In 1926 he earned a Sc.D. at Charles University in Prague. He served as a Captain in the Russian Army Medical Corps, 1917-1918 on the southwestern front and was\ndecorated with the Order of St. Vladimir. Prior to leaving Russia, Dr. Sokoloff served as Head of the Department of Experimental Medicine at the Institute of Science, Lesgaft University. He was a Fellow at the University of Brussels, Belgium and subsequently at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.\nDr. Sokoloff was a passionate believer in democracy. Prior to the end of the Russian Monarchy, he was active in the Social-Revolutionary Party. He spent six months in solitary confinement at the age of sixteen. Later, at the time of the (Alexander) Kerensky regime, he was elected by the army on the southwestern front as a member of the All-Russian Constituent Assembly, which\nwas then dispersed by Vladimir Lenin. He was arrested by the communists and spent more than four months at the Boutykri prison before being freed at the pleading of Nicholas Morosoff, President of Lesgaft University, who had begged Lenin to \"save the life of a promising young scientist.\" In 1929, he came to the United States at the invitation of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical\nResearch. He worked at the Crocker Institute at Columbia University from 1930-1931. From 1931-1935 worked for the Department of Pathology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1936 he returned to Columbia as a Research Fellow, where he remained until1942. He also worked at Harlem City Hospital. In 1947, he moved to Florida, where he became Director of the Cancer Research Institute at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. His move was prompted by his interest in citrus bioflavonoids (Vitamin-P). He was a pioneer in the work of bio-flavonoids and ascorbic acid in capillary fragility, radiation injury, and viral infections. He conducted a long-term study on the\neffects with aging cardiac patients and large doses of ascorbic acid on blood fat metabolism in addition to its effects on atherosclerosis and the aging process. Under a NASA grant, Dr. Sokoloff investigated high altitude malaise and related it to the concentrations of blood serotonin and serum ascorborne, as well as blood serotonin concentration both in normal and abnormal conditions such as hypercholesteremia, cancer, and various cardiac conditions.\nDr. Sokoloff's overwhelming passion was in the field of cancer research. He strongly believed that the cure for cancer would be achieved by non-toxic agents, and he continued his research until his death. He felt that there was clear evidence, as he wrote, \"that non-toxic agents do\nexist and that they may be in the field of fungi.\" While studying over 600 fungi from the Florida Everglades, he discovered two such antibiotics which were then submitted to the NCI for testing. It was found that they were completely non-toxic, even if used over a long period of\ntime, and they were shown to have strong anticancer activity. After graduation from the Bolles School, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958 from the University of Virginia, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Stetson University in 1961. His early legal work included positions as the Assistant Duval County Solicitor (1963-1965), and Assistant State Attorney for Duval County (1965-1967). In June 1967, he was elected from Ward 8 to the Jacksonville City Council (prior to Consolidation), and under the new consolidated government, won election to the City Council from District 13. He became Council President on July 1, 1970, the third and the last President of consolidated government's first City Council. In 1971, he did not seek re-election to the Council, and returned to private law practice in Jacksonville.","Humphries was active in a number of civic, fraternal, professional, and religious organizations. A month after Humphries left the Council in 1971, Mayor Hans Tanzler appointed him to the first Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and he served the next eight years as DDA Chairman. In 1989, he was appointed to the Fourth Judicial Nominating Commission by Florida Governor Bob Martinez, and served a four-year term until 1992. Other civic activities included service affiliations with the Florida League of Cities, Florida Community College, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Jacksonville Children's Museum, and St. Luke's Hospital.","His involvement with the University of North Florida deserves special mention. In 1969, as a member of the Jacksonville City Council, he was a strong supporter of the present suburban location for the University versus an urban site as proposed by other Council members. He was appointed to the first University of North Florida Foundation Board of Trustees, and was elected Foundation Board President in 1976-77. For his extensive service to the University, he was awarded a UNF Presidential medallion in October 2008.","Humphries had a long and distinguished service in the U.S. military. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and entered the Cadet Aviation Program. He served in the U.S. and overseas as a squadron pilot until his release from active duty in 1958 to pursue his civilian education. Subsequently, he joined the Florida Air National Guard, serving in several capacities where he held leadership positions: Air Operations Officer for State Headquarters (1972); Lieutenant Colonel and Director of Operations (1976-77); Chief of Staff and promotion to Colonel (1980); and promotion to Brigadier General in 1984. He retired from the Guard in 1989, and was awarded the Legion of Merit medal for his 36 years of outstanding military service.","The collection contains materials relating to Humphries' political activities, chiefly his tenure on the Jacksonville City Council from 1967-1971. Nehls served in the United States Army before and during World War II in the 105th Medical Battalion, 22nd Medical Regiment, and 136th Medical Regiment under the 34th Division. George began his service as enlisted and earned the rank of sergeant before attending Officer Candidate School and commissioning in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. George held a variety of roles in his career, including surgeon's assistant and was an instructor for a variety of training courses, ultimately reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant and serving in the European Theater of Operations.\n Laura E. Nehls, maiden name Teeple who was also nicknamed \"Betty,\" served in the medical corps working at McCloskey General Hospital, where she met George. She became a Register Nurse on December 16, 1940 and entered service on December 18, 1942. She worked in the medical, orthopedics, and dental wards with Americans, German POWs, and Italian POWs. Unfortunately, Laura contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized at the end of the war. She was subsequently ruled by the U.S. Army as retired with disability due to her military service and received authorized benefits. She separated from service on August 31, 1945.  George and Laura were married on December 9, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN.\n Laura was born on December 20, 1918, and passed away on January 28, 2016. George was born on November 9, 1917 and passed away on May 18, 2005. Both Laura and George are buried in Arlington National Cemetery.","This collection was donated by Nancy Nehls Nelson, daughter of George R. and Laura E. Nehls.
