He migrated to Dania Beach, Florida in 1907 where he and Minnie began farming and raising children as one of the pioneering Black families in Broward County, Florida. He was a strong believer in education and is credited for establishing the Dania School for Coloreds and St. Ruth Baptist Church in Broward County. All 14 of the Mizell children attended high school and 10 of them went on to obtain college degrees. Some of the more prominent Mizell children include Dr. Von DeLaney Mizell, Reverend Ivory Mizell, and Leroy \"Roy\" Mizell.","Reverend Ivory Mizell was a photographer, documenting the lives of African Americans in Broward County. He also established the first library in 1948 at Dixie Court Projects. He held residencies at John Hopkins Hospital, Grady School of Medicine, and Provident Hospital (Chicago, Illinois). Dr. Mizell advocated for better healthcare for the Black community in Broward County. He established Provident Hospital with Dr. James Franklin Sistrunk in 1938. Dr. Sistrunk was the first Black doctor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sistrunk Avenue in Fort Lauderdale is named in his honor. In addition to his medical profession, Dr. Mizell and Eula Mae Johnson initiated the wade-ins at the \"white-only\" beaches in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1961. One of Florida's state parks' name changed to honor their activism – Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach, Florida.","Ethel Mizell Pappy was born on May 27, 1916. She attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and Florida Normal and Industrial College, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1944. She received her Masters of Arts degree in 1955 from Columbia University. Ethel taught elementary students from 1938 to 1982. In addition to her vocation, she served as the first president of the Von D. Ethel was a member of community organizations such as Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the NAACP, the Urban League of Broward County, the Broward County Historical Society, the Democratic Club, the Board of Directors of Henderson Mental Health Clinic, and First Baptist Church Piney Grove. Ethel married Lilburne Brogdon Pappy and they had two daughters, Rosamond and Adlai. Her husband worked as a pharmacist at Pappy Pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale. Ethel passed away on May 18, 2014.","Provident Hospital opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1938. Black physicians Dr. Von D. Mizell and Dr. James Sistrunk founded the hospital to provide medical services to African Americans in Broward County during segregation. The hospital operated as a non-profit institution, expanding its capacity of 8 beds to 42 beds from 1938 to 1951. Dr. Mizell worked as the Medical Director and supervised staff. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Provident Hospital closed due to integration. The building became a community center, the Mizell Center for several years. He attended local schools until St. Petersburg's segregated black schools were closed during the Depression. He completed his degree at a high school affiliated with Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona, where he became a protege of his mother's good friend, Mary McLeod Bethune. After two years of college at Bethune-Cookman, Ponder completed his junior senior years as Morehouse College in Atlanta. After his graduation in 1938, he worked in the Adjutant General's Office of the War Department, serving there until the end of World War II. He married Clara Meshaw on February 3, 1942. In 1945, Ernest and Clara Ponder returned to St. Petersburg. He began teaching at Gibbs High School, taking over his mother's courses and classroom after she was forced to retire due to ill health. Formed by a few visionary high school band directors from across Florida, the FBA sought to promote interest in high school bands and band contests during an era where few schools had bands but interest was growing, and to strengthen the professional standing of the state's band directors. The FBA sponsored a\nsingle State Festival for several years. In the late 1940's, the Festival became large enough that the state was divided into six geographical Districts, and District Contests were devised to serve as qualifiers for bands attending the State Contest. Since then, additional growth resulted in 10\nDistricts, then to 14, then to 15 in 1982, to 17 in 1987, and to 19 in 1995. There is still 19 districts.\nThroughout the years, the FBA has managed state- and district-level band festivals, clinics, and other events, ensuring that music remained in the public school curriculum and maintaining high musical standards for students. In 1966, the FBA completed an amicable merger with the Florida Association of Bandmasters, the equivalent organization for African-American schools\nprior to integration. The FABD had formed in 1941with Leander Kirksey as the first president. He was followed by George H. Hill (1955-1960) and James W. Wilson (1960-1966). Wilson later served as president of the FBA from 1974-1975. Early organizers and leaders of the FBA include some giants in the school band field, including first president Major Ed Chenette, P.J. Gustat, Browne Greaton Cole, and John J. Heney. For a complete list of presidents visit https://fba.flmusiced.org/about/history. FBA eventually became a component organization of the Florida Music Education Association.\nIn addition, the FBA had a relationship with the Florida High School Activities Association, from whom the FBA, and their associated events, received funding. John Joseph Heney, Sr. (1903-1978) was a percussionist, music educator, and historian. He played with numerous bands throughout his career, most notably the John Phillip Sousa Band during its final six years. In addition to playing professionally, Heney taught at numerous schools in the Florida area, including Ketterlinus High School, Stetson University, and DeLand High School, where he stayed for thirty-two years. He was a founder of the FBA and instrumental in starting the archives.
