It was one of the first and largest labor unions in the world with a primarily female enrollment to guarantee fair treatment in the workforce. Originally gaining momentum in 1909 after the New York shirtwaist strike of 1909, also known as the Uprising of the 20,000, showed the nation that women, especially immigrants, who made up the majority of the workforce, that all people have a right to fair wage. Additionally, as the strike progressed, the nation became aware of the consequences of massive strikes, such as higher pricing for goods, lack of the supply side of economics, and the notion if one union strikes, others may follow as well. While keeping momentum, various factors over the years have slowed progress, including economic (recessions, war, the Great Depression), the ILGWU estimated to exceed over 300,000 members between the 1950s and 1970s, and has as many members today as back then. By 1995, the ILGWU merged with Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union in 1995, to form UNITE. In 2004, it merged with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union to form UNITE HERE.","This collection, the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) contains highlights, newspaper clippings, union decisions, and negotiations between garment union workers in South Florida and the companies they worked for. This includes companies such Stolberg's Tailors, Disco Manufacturing Co., and Nora Corporation. Additionally, this collection maintains bank statements, ledgers, and plaques to detail how the workers were paid, motivated, and acknowledged in the workforce.","Rights: In copyright. A realtor, Katz moved with his brother Mack (known as Max), a clothing retailer, and sister-in-law, Sayde, from New York City to Daytona, Florida, in 1922. Two years later, the Katz family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Moe Katz received the first Florida real estate license in 1924 and joined the Chamber of Commerce in 1925. His involvement in property appraising and real estate led him to join the Board of Directors of First Federal saving and Loan Association of Broward County in 1935. Soon after, he became the First Federal's Chief Appraiser and Executive Vice President. For more than 50 years, Katz was an active member of the Fort Lauderdale's Board of Realtors. ","Katz quest for a place of Jewish worship began with the Lauderdale Hebrew Congregation in 1925. He also acquired blocks of the Evergreen Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, for the purpose of apportioning plots for Jewish burials. In 1937, Katz established the first synagogue in Broward County, Temple Emanu-El, a Reform Jewish temple. He became its first president. Katz also joined other organizations such as the city's Planning and Zoning Board, the Board of Trustees of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, and the Fort Lauderdale Easter Seal Rehabilitation Clinic Elks, Masons, and Shriners. In 1980, he was honored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews for his service to the community. Moe Katz died on June 26, 1982, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.","The Moe Katz collection received file level processing. She graduated from Dillard High School at just 14 years old and, at 15, entered Fisk University on a Ford Foundation scholarship to study English. Her intellectual journey deepened at Oberlin College, where exposure to courses on the African diaspora inspired her to change her major to Sociology-Anthropology, earning her bachelor's degree in 1957.","Gloria enrolled at Columbia University in New York, where she pursued graduate studies in Anthropology. She earned both her Master's (1959) and Ph.D. degrees in (1964), becoming the first African American woman to teach at Columbia University. Following the completion of her doctorate, Dr. Sudarkasa was appointed assistant professor of anthropology at New York University (1970-1976), again marking a historic first for an African American woman. ","Gloria Albertha Marshall adopted the name Niara Sudarkasa to reflect her evolving identity as a cultural bridge between African Americans and continental Africans. Her name change marked a deepening commitment to diasporic connection and cultural reclamation.\nAt the University of Michigan, Dr. Sudarkasa continued to break barriers, becoming the first African American faculty member in the Department of Anthropology. From 1978 to 1981, she served as Associate Director of the Center for Afro-American and African Studies, advancing scholarship and institutional support for African diaspora research.","In 1986, she became the first female president of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, a role she held until 1998. Her scholarship increasingly centered on the lives of women in West Africa and the enduring strength of the Black family. Her work in Nigeria earned her recognition from the royal court: in 2001, His Royal Majesty Aláyélúwà Ọba Ọkúnadé Sijuwade Olúbùsẹ II of the Royal Court of Ifẹ́ conferred upon her the chieftaincy title Yèyé Olókun Ìgbàdérò. She was the first African American to receive this honor from the Ifẹ́ Kingdom.","Following her retirement from higher education, Dr. Sudarkasa returned to her hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she became the first scholar-in-residence at the newly opened African American Research Library and Cultural Center in 2002.\nDr. Sudarkasa was married to John L. Clark and was the mother of Michael Sudarkasa. She passed away on May 31, 2019, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship, leadership, and cultural stewardship.","The Niara Sudarkasa Collection received container level processing.
