Mullen (1924-2008) was born in September of 1924 in Tampa and graduated from Plant High School in 1942. He graduated from Duke University with a degree in Naval Science in 1946 and briefly served in the Navy. He then attended the University Of Florida College of Journalism for a short period before returning to Tampa to work for the Tampa Tribune. For two years he worked as a reporter before leaving the newspaper to work for his father's printing company, which included the farm monthly magazine \"Florida Grower and Rancher.\" He married Katherine Hoag in 1949 and they had four children. His father died soon after and Mullen took over the company at the age of 26.","Sensing the need for a Florida business magazine, he founded Florida Trend in 1958. It soon gained a reputation for its straight, oftentimes ponderous discussion of Florida business. Mullen included a oftentimes anecdotal article on the back page of the Trend , giving out-of-state readers a native viewpoint. With the success of Florida Trend, Mullen also found The South Magazine , another business themed publication.","In 1972, Mullen bought the V. M. Ybor Cigar Factory in Ybor City. A longtime admirer of the rich history of the area, Mullen planned to renovate the building and turn it into a mixed use building, with shops and offices. The one and a half acre site was renamed Ybor Square at a time when few investors saw any future in Ybor City after the effects of urban renewal.","In 1980, Mullen sold Florida Trend to the St. Petersburg Times to focus all his attentions on Ybor Square. In retirement he published numerous books on the Civil War and local history. He has also received many honors for his work in the rejuvenation of Ybor City. He passed away at the age of 84 in 2008 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.","\"Harris Mullen gave Florida readers 'Trend,' his mind,\" St. Petersburg Times . Print.","Note written by Joe Tamargo, 2011","Mullen published the Florida Trend for 22 years and wrote a column about his thoughts on Florida in every publication. They are available online through the USF Tampa library catalogue and in the Special Collections Department.","Books also published by Mullen:","Mullen, Harris H. Florida Close-Up . Tampa, Fla: Trend Publications, 1972.","Mullen, Harris H. A History of the Tampa Bay Hotel . Tampa, Fla: University of Tampa, 1966","The collection primarily consists of materials related to Mullen's ownership of the Florida Trend magazine and the Ybor Square development. These materials include correspondence, speeches, photos, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. Most correspondence from 1977-1982 details the development of the Ybor City district in Tampa, Florida and Ybor Square.","None.  The contents of the collection may be subject to copyright.  Visit the United States Copyright Office's website at http://www.copyright.gov/ for more information.","USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections","Mullen, Harris H. While his Father was in the navy, George's family lived at Pearl Harbor, and he witnessed the 1941 attack. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He married Anne Real in 1963; they eventually had three sons and a daughter.","\nIn 1958, Millay opened the Reef restaurant in Los Angeles with David Tallichet. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. Together with Milton Shedd and David DeMott, they organized the Marine Park Corporation to create a marine park in San Diego. Sea World opened in 1964 and expanded in 1970 with a park in Ohio followed by the Orlando park in 1972. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. The company took over the failing Seven Seas park and redeveloped it into the second Wet 'n Wild in 1983 followed by Las Vegas in 1985. Additional sites opened in Garland, TX, Brazil and Mexico. From humble beginnings, four generations have built Noble into the business that it is today. William G. Roe, the founder of Noble, began a fresh fruit distributorship in upstate New York. Wanting to be closer to his network of suppliers, he moved his family to Florida and built a packing house next to the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (a common practice in those days). It was at this time his sons, Frederick and Willard, began planting citrus groves, focusing specifically on tangerines. In fact, the first tangerine trees planted were the Dancey. In 1927, the \"Noble®\" name was registered and thus began the packing of only the best tangerines. (Taken from WG Roe and Sons official LinkedIn Profile: Wm. G.
