Kendrick was the first American citizen to enlist in the Canadian army in WWI, and following his experience during that war, became involved with services to those who had been blinded. Due to the extent on his research with the blind while creating Cpt. Maclain, the U. S. Army asked Kendrick to serve as a consultant on the rehabilitation of the blind during WWII, which became the basis for his novel Lights Out. Kendrick spent years traveling Florida as a salesman during the interwar years, which gave him an intimate knowledge of Florida history and geography. In 1951, he returned to Cuba and became music director of the Havana Philharmonic, a post he held until January 1959. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve.
