It started in 1975 as the Broward County Library \"Project for the Economically Disadvantaged\" but soon became internationally known as Library-in-Action Project. The project ran until 2002.","The Von D. Mizell Library in the historic Sistrunk neighborhood, which became part of the Broward County Library system in 1974, was the headquarters of Library-In-Action. As a result of LIA-authored grant funding, four additional libraries were opened: Dania Beach Library (Feb. 5, 1979), Collier City Library (1980), Rock Island Library (1980), and Carver Ranches Library (1982). Also in 1980, the Von D. Mizell Library moved to a new building with a larger collection. These five libraries provided youth and adults with free access to books, literacy classes, and tutoring services. They also created tailor-made services and programs based on community input.","Broward County Library's Assistant Director, Samuel Morrison, hired an administrative team to oversee the LIA program: Tyrone Bryant (Director), Janet Hansen (Assistant Director), and Tanya Simons-Oparah (Outreach Services Coordinator). The LIA team earned millions of dollars in grants, trained librarians and staff, and conducted programming. ","From 1977 to 1980, Library-In-Action staff canvassed neighborhoods and offered library resources to the Collier City community before the Collier City Library was built. The LIA's Homework Assistance program bussed children from elementary schools to the Collier City Library, where they received help with their homework and school projects, graduating more than 200 students in its early years. ","The LIA project also involved a Bookmobile and a Footmobile service - where staff went door-to-door promoting libraries and delivering books. Other notable programs included speakers such as Alex Haley (author of \"Roots\") in 1980, Elton Fox, and Tom Feelings. The Black Heritage program educated children on Africa, and an African hut was constructed in the Von D. Mizell Library as part of the programming.","LIA Director Tyrone Bryant coined the name \"Library-In-Action\". Tyrone Bryant (1942-1988) was a graduate of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University. Prior to his directorship at the Langston Hughes Library he was the director of the Committee for the Corona-East Elmhurst Community Corp, where he began working in 1967. The Committee's activism ultimately formed the Langston Hughes Cultural Center and Library in the Corona neighborhood in New York City. Tyrone Bryant became the first Director of the Langston Hughes Library which opened April 26, 1969 and served the needs of inner-city residents. Bryant moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1975 to become the LIA Director. The many programs conducted during the BCL LIA project originated from Tyrone Byrant's experience with programs at the Langston Hughes Library, such as the Homework Assistance Program. In 1983 Bryant was named Assistant Director of the Broward County Library system in charge of Special Services while also retaining his position as Project Director of LIA. Bryant also served as the chairman of the Sistrunk Historical Festival from 1983 until 1988. He married Claudia Wright in 1986. Tyrone Bryant died on February 24, 1988 at age 45. The Rock Island Library was rededicated in his honor on April 20, 1988 as the Tyrone Bryant Library Branch.","The 1980 Sistrunk Historical Festival saw the dedication of the Von D. Mizell Center which housed the Von D. Mizell Branch Library.","The LIA program collaborated with the City of Fort Lauderdale to create the Sistrunk Historical Festival in 1979, celebrating the county's black pioneers. The festival began as a two-day event to initiate economic redevelopment and held programming on African American culture, and under Bryant's chairmanship grew to a month-long event drawing over 100,000 people by 1988.","This collection received file level processing. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? His walks to and from a Lutheran parochial school several miles from his home gave him an opportunity to develop a passionate interest in birds and plants. He completed a teacher education program at the Lutheran Teacher's Seminary in Addison, Illinois and taught in Illinois, Missouri and Texas. Nehrling married Sophia Schoff of Oak Park, Illinois on July 20, 1874 and they had nine children. Their eldest son, Walter, became a professor of Botany at Illinois State Normal School. Henry Nehrling was an original member of the American Ornithologist's Union formed in 1883.","\nWhile living in Houston, Texas from 1879, Nehrling first had the opportunity of growing tropical plants. In 1887, he was appointed deputy collector and inspector of customs at the port of Milwaukee where he remained for three years until he accepted the post of Custodian of the Public Museum in Milwaukee where he collected plant specimens for their greenhouse. He purchased land in Gotha, Florida in 1884, but did not visit the property until 1886. Slowly, as his finances allowed, he developed the property into an ornamental garden. At the Columbian Exposition of 1893, Nehrling had the opportunity of examining many tropical plants and trees and became fascinated with the fancy-leafed caladium. Through a South American horticulturist, Adolph Lietz, Nehrling acquired hundreds of Brazilian caladium specimens. These were first housed in his greenhouse in Milwaukee but were later moved to Gotha. Nehrling created new hybrid caladiums which he named in honor of his wife, the \"Mrs. Sophie Nehrling,\" his son the \"Arno Nehrling\" and his daughter-in-law \"Mrs. Arno Nehrling.\"","\nNehrling lost his position with the Public Museum of Milwaukee and permanently settled in Gotha in 1904. where he also began to experiment with the colorful annual flowering Amaryllis. He grew, hybridized, and popularized many unusual and exotic plants for the general public. Caladiums, palms, bamboo, and amaryllis were all introduced to the United States by way of his Palm Cottage Gardens. Nehrling collaborated with the Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction, which was part of what was then called the Bureau of Plant Industry. Through this connection, Nehrling was able to expand his international contacts and gather information, plants and seeds from tropical horticulturists around the world. Nehrling's garden became so well known that people like John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, and Theodore Roosevelt came to visit and learn gardening tips. Nehrling's wife, Sophia, died on November 11, 1911, and on June 7, 1916 he married Betty P. Mitchell. A freeze in 1917 killed many of his most valuable plants; to avoid a recurrence, he purchased property in Naples, Florida where he could safely grow tropical species. He settled there in 1922 and by 1925, Nehrling had over three thousand species of tropical plants. Financial problems forced him to return to Gotha where he died on November 22, 1929 and was buried in Woodlawn cemetery near Gotha. His garden in Naples was preserved as the Jungle Larry's Caribbean Gardens and some efforts have been made to preserve his Palm Cottage Gardens in Gotha.","\nNehrling always wrote about his interests; he wrote articles on birds for the Nuttall Ornithological Club in Texas. In 1922, he began writing columns for The American Eagle, a weekly newspaper published in Estero, Florida. His first book Orchids in South Florida was published in 1890 and was followed a year later by Die Nordamerikanische Vogelwelt (North American Bird Life). Two volumes of Our Native Birds of Song and Beauty were published in 1893 and 1896 respectively.
