Their art collection of over 500 pieces primarily contained African American and Haitian art. Portions of the collection that they amassed now reside at several major museums throughout the United States.","John Hamilton Hewitt Jr. was born in 1924 in New York City, New York. He attended Harvard College and New York University where he obtained his Master's degree in 1949. Hewitt was an instructor for the Department of English and co-chairman for the Division of Humanities at Morehouse College in Atlanta. Hewitt also held the post of reporter for the New York Amsterdam News; later on he became a medical writer for the Medical Tribune, and served as an editor for both Hospital Practice and Emergency Medicine. Hewitt wrote various articles in publications such as the New York History, the Massachusetts Review, Afro-Americans in New York Life and History, and the International Review of African American Art. He was a member of the American Medical Writers Association. John Hewitt passed away on February 25, 2000.","Vivian Ann Davidson was born on February 17, 1920 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Geneva College in 1943 and a M.S. degree in library science from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1944. Vivian Hewitt worked as a librarian in Pittsburg and Atlanta, Georgia. She was the first black woman to serve as a librarian in the city of Pittsburgh. From 1963 to 1983, she was the chief librarian at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Vivian was the first African American president of the Special Libraries Association (1978-1979). She was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Citation from the University of Pittsburgh-Carnegie Library School Alumni Association, Merit Award from Carnegie Mellon University, and the L.H.D. from Geneva College. In addition to being recognized by her alma maters, she was recognized by the American Library Association, and in 1984 she was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame. In 2016, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain bestowed the title of Dame upon Hewitt for her work in the service of humanity. In 2017, Hewitt received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at Carnegie Mellon University's 120th Commencement. Eugene Grigsby, Vivian Hewitt's cousin and internationally acclaimed artist, introduced the couple to many artists. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. She moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1955 and married Joseph Alois Kolb in February of 1958. The couple had three children: Joseph, Bernadette, and Sean. She worked for over a decade as a staff reporter for the Fort Lauderdale Daily News newspaper until she resigned in 1970 and became an environmentalist. In 1972, Kolb was appointed to the Broward Pollution Control Board. In 1974, Kolb became the first woman elected to the Broward County Commission. In April 1975, she was appointed to the Broward Planning Council, and served until she was replaced in 1979. In 1978 she was named Conservationist of the Year by the Florida Wildlife Federation following the Broward County Commission passage of the Urban Wilderness Park System, a measure by which the Commission could set aside environmentally senisitive land for parks. In 1979, she received medical intervention and began treatment for ovarian cancer. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, and a Ph.D. in English all from New York University. In 1968, Dr. Nathan began his career at Florida Atlantic University. In his early career, Dr. Nathan wrote several textbooks dealing with English grammar and style, and literary interpretation of the short story and poetry while continuing to write poetry and short stories.","Dr. Nathan published several books of poetry in addition to publishing over 450 poems in various publications. He has published over 22 short stories. In addition to the unpublished poems and short stories in the collection, it also contains his unpublished memoirs and novels. Dr. Nathan published over 62 scholarly articles on Shakespeare, Chaucer, Blake, The Bible, Keats, Shelly, and T. S. Elliot. Dr. Nathan passed away June 11, 2013.","In 2018, additional material donated by his daughter. This material was described and added to the existing collection by Leslie Siegel.
