Howard Sweatt (1909-1993) was a leader in the Florida citrus industry, especially the citrus\ncanning industry. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Sweatt moved to the Central Florida area in\n1942; he became the owner of BESCO Products Company in Orlando in 1946. From 1947-\n1948, he was President of the Florida Canners League, and then served as the President of\nthe Florida Canners Association from 1949-1950. In 1951, he sold his BESCO cannery and\nstarted at Fosgate Citrus Concentrate Cooperative as their sales manager. He left Fosgate in\n1957 and eventually joined Golden Gem Growers in 1962 as their marketing director. Because\nof his position at Golden Gem, Sweatt was one of the original founders of Citrus Central Inc.\nHe joined the company in 1968, when Citrus Central took on all marketing responsibilities for\nGolden Gem and other affiliated companies. In 1974, Sweatt retired from the citrus industry. In\naddition to his leadership in the citrus industry, Sweatt was a leader in many organizations\naround Orlando such as the Rotary Club, Central Florida Sales Executive Club, and the\nCountry Club of Orlando.","For more information on the Florida Canners Association that Sweatt served as President of\nfrom 1949-1950, please see MSCIT009 Florida Citrus Processors Association Records.","Sweatt's papers are arranged in five series – Canning and Processing, Companies (he worked\nat), Foreign Trade, Marketing, and Personal. The materials reflect his professional life, with\nsome photographs and documents of his personal life. Sweatt worked at several Citrus\nfocused companies as well as volunteered at several Citrus canning associations. He was\ninfluential in taking the Florida orange juice trade overseas, especially to Japan, and this is\nreflected in the Foreign Trade series. The files contain correspondence, reports, brochures,\nand studies. The Canning and Processing series includes, reports, correspondence, research\nfiles, and information about the soft serve industry at the time. Marketing files are about\nmarketing various aspects of the citrus industry. Within the Company series, for Golden Gem,\nthere are membership newsletters dating from 1967 to 1984, and stockholder meeting files\nfrom the 1960's and 1970's.","Permission to publish material from the C. ","A pioneer in women's journalism, Anderson became nationally known and acclaimed for her work as the editor of the women's page in the Miami Herald. She was instrumental in transforming the women's page from focusing on fashion, food, and social events to covering the serious social, economic, and political issues affecting women in the 1950s and 60s. During her time as editor, Anderson extensively covered the burgeoning women's movement; she was not afraid to publish articles that discussed birth control, the sexual revolution, and other women's issues that were deemed too controversial by other newspapers. Anderson was a three time winner of the The J. C. Penney-University of Missouri Journalism Award for her excellence in women's page journalism. She stepped down from her position as editor in 1970 and became a reporter for the Miami Herald's home and design department. In 1972, she left the Miami Herald to become dean of University Relations and Development at Florida International University. In 1973, she was appointed by the governor to serve as a chairperson in the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. After retiring from her position as dean in 1977, Anderson continued working as an activist for feminism and women's history in Florida. She served as editor for the magazine of the Historical Association of Southern Florida from 1979 to 1988, and in 1980 she published a book, Julia's Daughters: Women in Dade's History . More than 40,000 American men refused to fight during World War II. Citing principled opposition, they declared themselves conscientious objectors. Rejecting combat duty, nearly 12,000 men entered Civilian Public Service (CPS) with the intent to perform \"work of national importance\" as an alternative to combat duty. The CPS program was set up by members of the historic peace churches (Mennonites, Brethren, and Quakers) and participated in by pacifists from other churches, of no specific religious persuasion, and, in the case of a few, no persuasion except not to fight in that particular war. CPS men worked as aides in mental hospitals, volunteered as smoke jumpers in forest fires, and participated in grueling medical and scientific experiments. Frazer and O'Sullivan use the oral histories of 15 CPS men and two of their wives to illuminate their experience during World War II. ","Heather T. Frazer (1940 – 2016) was a professor of history at Florida Atlantic University. In 1971, she became the first female faculty member in the FAU history department where she taught for 35 years before retiring in 2006. During her tenure, she served as Department Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. She also pioneered the study of women's history at FAU, helping establish the Women's Studies program, which is now the Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Dr. Frazer taught courses in women's history, modern Britain and British Empire, Indian history, and oral history.","John O'Sullivan (1939-2000) was a professor of history at Florida Atlantic University.
