He received his theological education at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA in 1934. His first ministry was as an Assistant Pastor in Wilmington, NC where he met his wife, Marguerite Crawford. Thompson later moved to Miami, FL where he lived when entering active duty as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army on April 7, 1942. Thompson served in New Guinea and the Philippines before his discharge but continued in the U.S. Army Reserves until retirement in 1968. Thompson became the pastor of the Palmetto Presbyterian Church, Palmetto, FL in March 1955. Nehls served in the United States Army before and during World War II in the 105th Medical Battalion, 22nd Medical Regiment, and 136th Medical Regiment under the 34th Division. George began his service as enlisted and earned the rank of sergeant before attending Officer Candidate School and commissioning in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. George held a variety of roles in his career, including surgeon's assistant and was an instructor for a variety of training courses, ultimately reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant and serving in the European Theater of Operations.\n Laura E. Nehls, maiden name Teeple who was also nicknamed \"Betty,\" served in the medical corps working at McCloskey General Hospital, where she met George. Enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve prior to World War II, Austin attended Platoon Leaders Class at Quantico, Virginia in 1936 and 1938 before receiving a commission on September 20, 1938.  Ordered to active duty on December 15, 1940, Austin served as an instructor at Basic School at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  Deployed to several bases before transferred overseas, Jones served with the Fourth Base Depot in the Russell Islands.  He was reassigned to the Seventh Field Depot and took part in the battles of Saipan and Okinawa.  Remaining in the Reserves after 1945, Austin was recalled to active-duty for the Korean War from  August 1950 until June 1952. Ordered to active duty on December 15, 1940, Austin served as an instructor at Basic School at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  Deployed to several bases before transferred overseas, Jones served with the Fourth Base Depot in the Russell Islands.  He was reassigned to the Seventh Field Depot and took part in the battles of Saipan and Okinawa.  Remaining in the Reserves after 1945, Austin was recalled to active-duty for the Korean War from  August 1950 until June 1952.
