More than 40,000 American men refused to fight during World War II. Citing principled opposition, they declared themselves conscientious objectors. Rejecting combat duty, nearly 12,000 men entered Civilian Public Service (CPS) with the intent to perform \"work of national importance\" as an alternative to combat duty. The CPS program was set up by members of the historic peace churches (Mennonites, Brethren, and Quakers) and participated in by pacifists from other churches, of no specific religious persuasion, and, in the case of a few, no persuasion except not to fight in that particular war. CPS men worked as aides in mental hospitals, volunteered as smoke jumpers in forest fires, and participated in grueling medical and scientific experiments. Frazer and O'Sullivan use the oral histories of 15 CPS men and two of their wives to illuminate their experience during World War II. ","Heather T. She attended elementary school in St. Petersburg but graduated from Lakeland High School in 1934 and Florida Southern College in 1937 with a BS. Ed degree. In 1968 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Human letters by Philathea College of London, Ontario, Canada, and she took graduate level classes at the University of Florida, but she never finished a Ph.D. She died December 14, 2006 after retiring from Florida Southern College in 1981 but teaching as an adjunct for two more years. ","She worked as a student assistant in the Art department (1936-37) at FSC . It was at this time that Dr. Spivey, president of the college, asked her to show Mr. Frank Lloyd Wright around the campus the first day he visited in 1937. Stoddard was then hired to teach art at the campus in the fall on 1937 and continued the role of liaison with Wright for the rest of his life. She was also responsible for handling much of the correspondence that occurred during the construction. Because of the nature of her responsibility with the project and her over forty-plus year tenure at the school, Stoddard planned to write a book on the history of the campus, and accumulated sources regarding Florida Southern College and Frank Lloyd Wright. Friend and author Lawrence Kinsley utilized her extensive archive for his 2016 text, A Child of the Sun: Frank Lloyd Wright's West Campus Project at Florida Southern College. He migrated to Dania Beach, Florida in 1907 where he and Minnie began farming and raising children as one of the pioneering Black families in Broward County, Florida. He was a strong believer in education and is credited for establishing the Dania School for Coloreds and St. Ruth Baptist Church in Broward County. All 14 of the Mizell children attended high school and 10 of them went on to obtain college degrees. Some of the more prominent Mizell children include Dr. Von DeLaney Mizell, Reverend Ivory Mizell, and Leroy \"Roy\" Mizell.","Reverend Ivory Mizell was a photographer, documenting the lives of African Americans in Broward County. He also established the first library in 1948 at Dixie Court Projects. Leroy \"Roy\" Mizell was a mortician and established the Roy Mizell Funeral Home, today known as the Roy Mizell \u0026 Kurtz Funeral Home.","Dr. Von DeLaney Mizell (1910-1973) earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Moorehouse College in 1932 and completed his medical education at Meharry Medical College in 1936. He held residencies at John Hopkins Hospital, Grady School of Medicine, and Provident Hospital (Chicago, Illinois). Dr. Mizell advocated for better healthcare for the Black community in Broward County. He established Provident Hospital with Dr. James Franklin Sistrunk in 1938. Dr. Sistrunk was the first Black doctor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sistrunk Avenue in Fort Lauderdale is named in his honor. In addition to his medical profession, Dr. Mizell and Eula Mae Johnson initiated the wade-ins at the \"white-only\" beaches in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1961. One of Florida's state parks' name changed to honor their activism – Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach, Florida.","Ethel Mizell Pappy was born on May 27, 1916. She attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and Florida Normal and Industrial College, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 1944.
