Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. Collecion rehoused and finding aid revised by Chynna Thomas in 2023.","A large book collection accompanies this collection and may be accessed by performing a series search \"Michael A. Correspondence, publications, notebooks, drawings, research materials, memorabilia and photographs show all aspects of their work including plant collecting, landscape designing and publishing. Photographs may be black and white or color prints, negatives or slides. Additional materials about the Fosters may be found in Series II and III.","\nSeries II: Subject Files, 1880-2003 contains catalogues, journals, photographs, memorabilia and correspondence that Michael Spencer brought together under his chosen subject headings and arranged alphabetically. Many of the materials in this series originally came from Mulford and Racine Foster, which means that there is some overlap with the previous series. Spencer's own collecting interest lay in documenting the importance of bromeliads in society, and he collected many common items that showed bromeliads, especially pineapples.","\nSeries III: Author Files, 1754-1997 includes a variety of media used for research, such as articles, books, magazines, newspaper clippings, and photographs. As a result of the fire he and five other circus officials pleaded no contest to charges of involuntary manslaughter and were sentenced to prison. He served\neight months and in 1945 was returned to Florida, where he received a pardon from Governor Millard F. Caldwell. Upon his release from prison, Haley again served as president and director for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus of Sarasota from 1946 to 1948. She attended elementary school in St. Petersburg but graduated from Lakeland High School in 1934 and Florida Southern College in 1937 with a BS. Ed degree. She attended graduate classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburg, but obtained her Master's degree in Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1942. In 1968 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Human letters by Philathea College of London, Ontario, Canada, and she took graduate level classes at the University of Florida, but she never finished a Ph.D. She died December 14, 2006 after retiring from Florida Southern College in 1981 but teaching as an adjunct for two more years. Stoddard was then hired to teach art at the campus in the fall on 1937 and continued the role of liaison with Wright for the rest of his life. She was also responsible for handling much of the correspondence that occurred during the construction. Because of the nature of her responsibility with the project and her over forty-plus year tenure at the school, Stoddard planned to write a book on the history of the campus, and accumulated sources regarding Florida Southern College and Frank Lloyd Wright. Schweitzer, Robert Law Weed, and others during the design and construction of Florida Southern College's Lakeland campus. When FSC first moved to Lakeland in 1922, two permanant brick buildings were constructed: E.E. Edge Hall and Joseph Reynolds Hall. In the 1930s, Alan Spivey Hall, the Fannin Building, and Gilbert Gymnaseum were constructed, as well as a few other campus features. In 1938, looking to make a spash and put the college \"on the map,\" President Ludd M. Spivey sent a telegram to Frank Lloyd Wright, inviting him to build a \"Great Temple of Education.\" Wright accepted, and over the next twenty years designed nineteen buildings and structures, twelve of which were built. ","In the late 1940s Orlando-based architect Nils M. Schweitzer, who had been trained by Wright, became the site manager. He went on to design several more buildings for the college during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including the impressive Bishop John Branscomb Auditorium. ","Miami architect Robert Law Weed designed much of the east side of campus, including veterans' dormitories, the Herbert E. Wolfe Building, and the Panhellenic Dorms.
