Shirley has no known living relatives.","Eleanor Gifford was born May 5, 1914 in Philadelphia, PA. She enlisted in the U.S. Women's Army Corps on April 17, 1943 in New York, NY. At the time she performed as a singer and actress in New York. From August to October 1945 Eleanor Gifford served as a first lieutenant WAC in Salzburg in the Special Services branch. From October 1945 to Febuary 1950 Eleanor Gifford was responsible for the organization of various activities of the Berchtesgaden Recreational Area as a WAC and civilian. She remained in Germany for the remainder of her life. Gifford married Günther Menzel on May 3, 1978  in Oberstdorf where she then also settled after retiring.\n \nEleanor's brother, Elliott Temple Gifford, was born on January 3, 1913, graduated from High School Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1930 and immediately went to the U.S. Navy and served as an Aerographer's Mate. He was listed as missing in action, presumed dead, when the USAT  Dorchester   was torpedoed by a German submarine on February 3, 1943. The  Dorchester   was bound for the Army Command Base at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","The collection 17.0005 of Leigh Jamison Gifford and Eli Gifford (01.0171.1314) are related to Eleanor and Elliott Gifford.","This collection relates to Eleanor Gifford who served in the special services and her brother Elliott T. Gifford who served as an Aerographer's Mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Elliott T. Gifford was killed in action on board the USAT  Dorchester  when it was sunk on February 3, 1943 by a German submarine. This collection contains documents, newspaper clippings, German event posters, radio transcripts, letters, and photographs predominately from Eleanor M. He was married to Dorothy Elinor King McQuigg, who was born March 20, 1908, in Fort Worth, TX, and died March 16, 1983, in Stuart, FL. Finger was born in 1925 in Tennessee and his wife Mildred was born on July 4, 1923. Mildred graduated from Stair Technical School while William enlisted into the United States Army in mid-1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Before William enlisted, Mildred worked at the Tennessee Eastman Company. William completed basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama where Mildred visited him frequently. During mid-1944, William was sent overseas with the 160th Infantry Regiment of the 40th Infantry Division of the United States Army to the Philippines. While overseas, Mildred gave birth to their son William, Jr. \"Billy.\" William was involved in the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in Luzon, the Philippines in January of 1945. After the war, he worked for the Alcoa Aluminum Company. Mildred passed away on June 24, 2017, and soon after on August 14, 2017, Bill passed away.","This collection was donated by Kerry Brown. During the 1959 and 1961 legislative sessions, Sessums worked as a legislative aide to former Senator Sam Gibbons, who played a key role in the establishment of the University of South Florida.  In 1963, Sessums was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he served as Speaker pro tempore from 1968 to 1970 and Speaker of the House from 1972 to 1974. During this time, Sessums remained greatly concerned with education in Florida.  He served as chairman of the House Education Committee from 1970 to 1972, and was particularly active in pressing for more equitable allocation of education funds.
