Stone had discovered these items while cleaning out an abandoned property in St. Petersburg. Subsequent review of the materials revealed the necessity of some conservation work and arrangement due to the condition in which these items had existed prior to his fortunate discovery. These records fill an important gap in our history.","Historic sources strongly indicate that Jordan Park was named for local black pioneer, Elder Jordan Sr., and that he donated land for the housing project. Indeed, Jordan Sr. was a successful entrepreneur who owned a reckonable amount of real estate in St. Petersburg during the height of the Jim Crow years. It should also be noted that Jordan Elementary School, the second school available to local African American students in St. Petersburg, sat in close proximity to the site where Jordan Park housing project was built. (The red brick school building still stands and has been renovated for use by a local Head Start program as part of the city's Midtown initiatives.) Elder Jordan Sr. built housing along 22nd Street South (the thoroughfare at the heart of St. Petersburg's black community), as well as houses laid out in courts further southeast of this area. Logical inference based on several historic sources point toward the housing project being named for Jordan Elementary School, and the school being named for Jordan Sr., who was for all purposes, a prominent developer in the local African American community.","These records fill an important gap in our history. The initial Jordan Park residential units were constructed between 1939 and 1941. After some success in relocating residents from \"derelict\" structures to this new facility, authorities approved additional housing at the Jordan Park site. The majority of the funding for its construction came from federal sources during the New Deal as part of the Wagner-Steagall Housing Act passed in August 1937. Beyond the importance of the items specifically concerned with Jordan Park, there are several photographs and records that document the substandard housing that existed in St. Petersburg's African American neighborhoods at the time that Jordan Park was expected to replace, including structures in Peppertown and the Gas Plant district. Many of the original black neighborhoods have since transitioned into other use (including the site of Tropicana Field on the former Gas Plant property) with little reference material available to researchers to learn about them.","Beyond the importance of the items specifically concerned with Jordan Park, there are several photographs and records that document the substandard housing that existed in St. Petersburg's African American neighborhoods at the time that Jordan Park was expected to replace, including structures in Peppertown and the Gas Plant district. Walter (1900-1981) was Editor of the University of Michigan Press when he retired in 1970. Dorothy (1903-1994) was an award-winning poet. They have three sons, Jerome, Stephen, and Denis.","\nIn 1931 Dorothy and Walter were married, Dorothy completed her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, and she won the Avery Hopwood Contest. The $1,500 prize enabled the couple to live in France and Italy for a time. Dorothy wrote several acclaimed books of poetry as well as numerous articles for the magazine transition (always spelled in the lower case), publishing work by writers such as Hart Crane, Ernest Hemingway and Carl Jung. Eugene Jolas, the French editor of transition, wrote Dorothy in 1931, \"You are the only one in America whose writing seems to me to be going in the right direction.\"","\nWalter also published some poetry and wrote plays with playwright and screenwriter Paul Osborn when the two were in college at the University of Michigan. After living in Greenwich Village and Paris, he returned to Ann Arbor to accept a position at the University of Michigan editing Museum Publications as well as doing editorial work for the Press.","\nThe Donnelly's had a keen interest in the printing arts. Collected materials include examples from the best paper-makers, type designers, typographers, book binders, and printers as well as those artists involved in book illustrations. Notable in the collection are numerous publications of The Typophiles, a small group of graphic arts professionals based in New York, including luminaries like Bruce Rogers and Frederic W. Goudy. The Typophiles, who began meeting around 1932, are still meeting and publishing today.","Collection processed by Nadine Helm and Elizabeth Konzak; finding aid created by Nadine Helm and Elizabeth Konzak. ","Series I, Family Papers, 1887-1979, Undated, contains family photographs, memorabilia, poetry, and collected information on printers, printing and typography.","\nSeries II, Typophiles, 1941-1969, Undated, consists of materials collected by the Donnellys as members of the organization of printers, typographers and appreciators of bookmaking. Materials include Chap Book Commentaries, fine press published information about the typophiles as a group, similar to an organizational newsletter that includes a colophon. Keepsakes were items created for an event such as Christmas to exhibit typographic skills. The Monographs are small examples of printing that exemplify the best of design, typography, and technique. "," \nSeries III, Additional Materials, 1909-2021, Undated, consists of seven boxes of card catalogs Walter and Dorothy Donnelly created to keep track of their inventory of the book collection. Various incoming and outgoing letters to the Donnellys, newspaper clippings, articles, poetry, and unpublished and published writings by the Donnellys can be found in the series. The personal books of Dorothy Donnelly, including her daily missal and reading and diary journals, are also featured.","Books donated with the Walter and Dorothy Donnelly Family Papers have been cataloged individually. His parents sent him to the United States in 1916 when he was twelve to study English and business administration. He lived with an American family in Brooklyn. Lamarque's first cartoon was published in the Boy Scout section of the New York World-Telegram and Evening Mail at age 15. Four years later he created Bla-Bla , a comic strip that appeared regularly in the New York Daily News . He is credited with creating, in the early 1920s, the first Spanish language comic strip that was not translated from English. The title cartoon character, Monguito , was a hapless soul, fully dressed in business suit and hat, who kept getting into sticky situations. Lamarque produced hundreds of these strips which were picked up by the New York based United Feature Syndicate and published daily in Spanish language newspapers throughout Latin America and the United States.","When he was twenty, Lamarque returned to Cuba and worked as the artistic director for the Havana newspaper Lunes de Diario de Cuba . He also published a booklet designed to teach the elements of caricature drawing. Lamarque returned to New York and was hired by the New York World Telegram and Evening Mail as a caricaturist. In this position, he produced political cartoons and caricatures for the paper, introducing his \"radiocatures\", which involved providing instructions on the radio for filling in a grid in the newspaper to produce a caricature of well-known figure in the news.","In 1927, at the age of 23, he became the first art director of Dell Publishing Company - a magazine empire that included Film Fun , I Confess , War Stories , Modern Screen , Popular Song , Spotlight , Radio Stars , Theatrical Page , Ballyhoo , and Modern Romances . He continued working there for 14 years.","In 1940-1941, Lamarque established Abril Lamarque Creations, a design firm that specialized in elegant and functional household objects and jewelry in a modernist tradition. His signature piece was the Pallettray, a serving tray modeled after an artist's palette and hand-finished in exotic woods.","Between 1941 and 1946, Lamarque became the first art director for the Sunday edition of the New York Times and redesigned the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review . Throughout his career, Lamarque designed and redesigned countless magazines and journals, including American Weekly , New York News , Metropolitan Life , Popular Science , This Week , US News-World Report , and others.","In 1948, Lamarque established a successful graphic design studio in New York that provided a full spectrum of design services, including annual reports, posters, product labeling, corporate publications, advertising, logos, package designs, and brochures. His clients included Barcardi Company, Con Edison, Ericcson Telephone, General Cable, Berlitz School, Lipton, Monsanto, and numerous magazines. In 1958, he was given the National Award for Graphic Design in packaging. His design for the annual American Red Cross poster was selected for the 1948 national Red Cross campaign.","His success and high demand as a publication art director, consultant, and designer was attributed to innovative design principles he based on the German Bauhaus School and its philosophy that promoted functional design principles. Lamarque reduced these principles to a set of guidelines suitable for page design and applied them successfully to a wide variety of publication and print layouts.","Lamarque's teaching experience began in the early 1940s with seminars and workshops he conducted for the publishing industry. He joined the faculty of New York University School of Continuing Education in 1958, where he taught until 1963, and later joined the Crowell Collier Institute and taught publication design workshops across the United States and Canada. He also gave workshops and courses at Oklahoma State School of Journalism.","Lamarque was a long-time member of the Society of Illustrators, Society of Art Directors, the Dutch Treat Club, National Press Club, and New York University Club. He was also an amateur magician and member of the Society of American Magicians. He performed magic acts for the annual Christmas party of the Society of Illustrators. Abril Lamarque died in 1999 at the age of 94.\nNote written by Archives of American Art","Language from the original item is typically transcribed directly and without redaction, especially for titles.
