Miami Beach architect Roy F. France designed the Art Deco style hotel and it was the first hotel building constructed on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The hotel attracted many tourists, boosting Fort Lauderdale's tourism industry. An additional six-story addition was built circa 1937 to increase the hotel capacity to 150 rooms. From June 1943 to January 1946, Lauderdale Beach Hotel and Trade Winds Hotel served as a United States Navy Training Center. The hotel reopened to the public in 1946 and expanded its capacity to 200 rooms in 1988. ","The Fort Lauderdale Historic Preservation Board designated Lauderdale Beach Hotel as a historic landmark in 2004. In 2005, a portion of the hotel building was demolished to make room for a new condominium development called Las Olas Beach Club.","Hermann Harold Riediger (1911-1998) worked as the Food and Beverage Control Manager at the Lauderdale Beach Hotel. Originally from Western Canada, Hermann held previous positions in Canadian hotels and the Princess Hotel in Bermuda. Hermann Riediger began his career as a bellhop at the Lauderdale Beach Hotel and worked his way up to assistant manager in 1956.","Hermann married Greta Hall (1916-2005) in 1936 and they settled in the Lauderdale-By-the-Sea community in Fort Lauderdale. Greta Riediger was a founding member of the Lauderdale-By-the-Sea Garden Club. Hermann and Greta Riediger's daughter, Kathryn \"Kathy\" Riediger Heinley attended Broward County public schools. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Correspondence, publications, notebooks, drawings, research materials, memorabilia and photographs show all aspects of their work including plant collecting, landscape designing and publishing. Photographs may be black and white or color prints, negatives or slides. Additional materials about the Fosters may be found in Series II and III.","\nSeries II: Subject Files, 1880-2003 contains catalogues, journals, photographs, memorabilia and correspondence that Michael Spencer brought together under his chosen subject headings and arranged alphabetically. Many of the materials in this series originally came from Mulford and Racine Foster, which means that there is some overlap with the previous series. Spencer's own collecting interest lay in documenting the importance of bromeliads in society, and he collected many common items that showed bromeliads, especially pineapples.","\nSeries III: Author Files, 1754-1997 includes a variety of media used for research, such as articles, books, magazines, newspaper clippings, and photographs. There are a significant number of materials authored by Mulford and Racine Foster and Lyman B. His notebooks, manscripts, teaching materials and correspondence may all be found here.","\nSeries VIII: Personal Files, 1863-2014 contains alphabetical files showing Spencer's interest in collecting books and his wide interests. A. Patti was a writer, historian and retired Army lieutenant colonel best known for his work with Ho Chi Minh 1945 and his subsequent 1980 book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross was published in 1980 and became known as a critical work on the study of politics in Asia. His walks to and from a Lutheran parochial school several miles from his home gave him an opportunity to develop a passionate interest in birds and plants. He completed a teacher education program at the Lutheran Teacher's Seminary in Addison, Illinois and taught in Illinois, Missouri and Texas. Nehrling married Sophia Schoff of Oak Park, Illinois on July 20, 1874 and they had nine children. Their eldest son, Walter, became a professor of Botany at Illinois State Normal School. Henry Nehrling was an original member of the American Ornithologist's Union formed in 1883.","\nWhile living in Houston, Texas from 1879, Nehrling first had the opportunity of growing tropical plants. In 1887, he was appointed deputy collector and inspector of customs at the port of Milwaukee where he remained for three years until he accepted the post of Custodian of the Public Museum in Milwaukee where he collected plant specimens for their greenhouse. He purchased land in Gotha, Florida in 1884, but did not visit the property until 1886. Slowly, as his finances allowed, he developed the property into an ornamental garden. At the Columbian Exposition of 1893, Nehrling had the opportunity of examining many tropical plants and trees and became fascinated with the fancy-leafed caladium. Through a South American horticulturist, Adolph Lietz, Nehrling acquired hundreds of Brazilian caladium specimens. These were first housed in his greenhouse in Milwaukee but were later moved to Gotha. Nehrling created new hybrid caladiums which he named in honor of his wife, the \"Mrs. Sophie Nehrling,\" his son the \"Arno Nehrling\" and his daughter-in-law \"Mrs. Arno Nehrling.\"","\nNehrling lost his position with the Public Museum of Milwaukee and permanently settled in Gotha in 1904. where he also began to experiment with the colorful annual flowering Amaryllis. He grew, hybridized, and popularized many unusual and exotic plants for the general public. Caladiums, palms, bamboo, and amaryllis were all introduced to the United States by way of his Palm Cottage Gardens. Nehrling collaborated with the Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction, which was part of what was then called the Bureau of Plant Industry. Through this connection, Nehrling was able to expand his international contacts and gather information, plants and seeds from tropical horticulturists around the world. Nehrling's garden became so well known that people like John Burroughs, Thomas Edison, and Theodore Roosevelt came to visit and learn gardening tips. Nehrling's wife, Sophia, died on November 11, 1911, and on June 7, 1916 he married Betty P. Mitchell. A freeze in 1917 killed many of his most valuable plants; to avoid a recurrence, he purchased property in Naples, Florida where he could safely grow tropical species. He settled there in 1922 and by 1925, Nehrling had over three thousand species of tropical plants. Financial problems forced him to return to Gotha where he died on November 22, 1929 and was buried in Woodlawn cemetery near Gotha. His garden in Naples was preserved as the Jungle Larry's Caribbean Gardens and some efforts have been made to preserve his Palm Cottage Gardens in Gotha.","\nNehrling always wrote about his interests; he wrote articles on birds for the Nuttall Ornithological Club in Texas.
