Eugene Jolas, the French editor of transition, wrote Dorothy in 1931, \"You are the only one in America whose writing seems to me to be going in the right direction.\"","\nWalter also published some poetry and wrote plays with playwright and screenwriter Paul Osborn when the two were in college at the University of Michigan. After living in Greenwich Village and Paris, he returned to Ann Arbor to accept a position at the University of Michigan editing Museum Publications as well as doing editorial work for the Press.","\nThe Donnelly's had a keen interest in the printing arts. Collected materials include examples from the best paper-makers, type designers, typographers, book binders, and printers as well as those artists involved in book illustrations. Afterwards, he toured briefly as part of a musical trio across Europe and North Africa in the late 1920s and 1930s. In 1936 Bolet returned to Havana to found and organise CMZ, Cuba's first classical radio station. There, he acted as music director and conductor from 1937 to 1943, founding and running both the first radio symphony orchestra in Cuba. More than 300 concerts were broadcast on air in the first three years. He left Cuba in the late 1940s to coordinate orchestras across South America, such as the Ballet Espanol de Ana Maria. In 1951, he returned to Cuba and became music director of the Havana Philharmonic, a post he held until January 1959. Political conditions caused him to leave Cuba in February 1959, and he moved to Europe where he conducted a series of concerts in London and Germany, to later become director of the Bilbao Symphony, Spain. In 1968 was selected as musical director of the Long Beach Symphony, California, a position he held for ten years. He also acted as Professor of Music at the California State College at Fullerton and Guest Lecturer at the Institute of Lifetime Learning, Long Beach, California. Until his death on November 10, 1999, he was active in the musical community and conducted orchestras not just in South America, but the United States, England, Spain and France as well."],"scopecontent_html_tesm":["\u003cp\u003eThis collection contains composed works of Cuban-American musical conductor and musician Alberto Bolet. In 1953, he became the head of the Scientific Exchange Service at the Inter-American Center for Housing and Urban Planning (CINVA) in Bogotá, Colombia, where he collaborated with notable figures in librarianship, such as Rubén Pérez Ortiz, and played a key role in organizing the First Library Conferences. In 1959, Florén took on the role of Director at the Inter-American Library School (EIB) in Medellín, Colombia, leading initiatives like the establishment of the Colombian Agricultural Librarians Association (BAC) and the Latin American Association of Schools of Library and Information Sciences (ALEBCI). Throughout his career, he represented Colombia in international forums, advised on the creation of the Dominican Republic's National Library in 1969, and authored numerous articles, essays, and bibliographies.","The Luis Florén Lozano Collection (1912–1973) document his extensive contributions to librarianship and education across Latin America. This collection comprises 23 archival boxes and 204 folders, detailing his professional roles and personal pursuits. It includes communications, letters, documents, photographs, drawings, manuscripts, news clippings, publications, and postcards. These materials chronicle his work as director of the library at the University of Santo Domingo, his tenure at CINVA in Bogotá, and his leadership at EIB in Medellín. The collection also reflects Florén's deep intellectual and personal interests, including a personal library of approximately 6,000 volumes on Spanish, Dominican, and Colombian history, literature, art, and library science. His books often bear his custom exlibris, illustrating the lasting impact of the Spanish Civil War on his life and exile.","Significant components of the collection highlight his efforts to modernize library systems, foster regional collaboration, and elevate the status of library science in Colombia and Latin America. The archive also underscores his role in founding professional associations, organizing landmark conferences, and advancing the profession internationally. Portions of his personal library are housed at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) in the Dominican Republic and Florida International University (FIU).","The materials within the collection provide researchers with a detailed view of Florén's professional legacy and the development of librarianship in Latin America. They also serve as a testament to his philosophical and artistic reflections, particularly in the context of the Spanish Civil War and its influence on his scholarly pursuits.","Luis Florén Lozano (1913–1973) fue un pionero bibliógrafo, bibliotecario y educador cuya carrera transformó la bibliotecología en América Latina. Beginning as the director of the University of Santo Domingo Library (1940–1953), he modernized library practices in the Dominican Republic.
