Dunn was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 4, 1919. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force on July 28, 1943 after completing pilot training. On February 17, 1944, Dunn was certified as having completed the course of training prescribed by Headquarters Second Air Force. As commander of a B-29, Dunn served with the 313th Bomb Wing, 39th Bombardment Squadron, 6th Combat Group in the Pacific. Dunn and his crew took part in bombing missions against a number of Japanese cities including Nagoya, Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka and Akashi. His crew flew their last mission against Marifu on August 15, 1945. Dunn received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters for his successful combat missions against Japan.\n","After returning to the United States, Dunn received a discharge from active-duty on December 8, 1945, but remained in the Army Air Force Reserve and later in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. On March 8, 1951, Dunn returned to active duty serving with the Strategic Air Command and on August 2, 1952, he received authorization to remain in this status indefinitely. \n \nAfter serving fourteen years as SAC bomber commander, Dunn volunteered for a tour of duty in Vietnam and served with the 315 Air Commando Troop Carrier Group based in Tan Son Hut Airfield reporting in November 1965. Prior to his deployment, Dunn completed at the Air University the Counter Insurgency Course offered by the Warfare Systems School. In a letter to Senator Everett Dirksen, January 16, 1966, Dunn protested that he had been assigned to a staff position at Tan Son Nhut instead of flying the C-123. Dunn noted that the Air Force lacked an adequate number of trained pilots and that it would be a waste of resources for him to learn the intricacies of a staff officer's job. He also observed that in SAC it \"is an accepted thing to make a career of being a crew member.\"\n \nDunn retired from active duty effective February 1, 1967 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. In retirement he took an active role in the Tampa Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars. He would also be recognized for his volunteer activities with the JROTC program in the Hillsborough County Schools, Florida and the ROTC program at the University of Tampa. Dunn passed away on April 21,1999 and is buried at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Criste, born on April 19, 1917, Harrisburg, PA, entered service in the U.S. Navy on February 13, 1943. Criste served in the US Navy during the Battle of Iwo Jima as an Electrician's Mate First Class with Group Pacific 11 (GROPAC 11),  Section E-9.  He arrived with his unit from Hawaii aboard the U.S.S. Whiteside (AKA-90.)  He witnessed and documented in a journal the initial invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945.  Criste, along with his unit, assisted in building the U.S. Naval Base on Iwo Jima.  While stationed on Iwo Jima for 9 months, Criste had the opportunity to accumulate Japanese military artifacts. Criste departed Iwo Jima on November 2, 1945 aboard U.S.S LSM-97 and transferred to the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. Chester which arrived in San Francisco on November 17, 1945 with a stop at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Criste was subsequently discharged on December 7, 1945. Criste worked as an electrician for 40 years and was a past-president of the IBEW Local 308, serving the Tampa Bay area. Criste also served as a Crime Watch captain in the Mount Vernon, FL area for many years.  In 2003, Criste was entered into the World War II Registry of Remembrances. Criste passed away on February 19th, 2004 in St. Petersburg, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy."," A GROPAC was a U.S. Naval organization designed to install and operate harbor and waterfront facilities and to provide certain harbor defenses for an advanced base. It normally provides for: the unloading of ships; installation and maintenance of navigational aids, piers, moorings, net defenses and underwater sound detection; the repair of small craft and harbor equipment; the operation of a harbor defense patrol; and the provision of a boat pool for use within the harbor. It provides, also, for its own administrative, communications, medical, and housing needs.  GROPACS vary materially from each other in size and composition since each is individually designed to meet the needs of a particular island or area. Ellingwood began his military service in 1936 and underwent recruit training in Connecticut and Rhode Island throughout the year. Throughout 1937, Ellingwood served as a Seaman Second Class on the USS :Cummings and after 1938, Ellingwood performed disbursing work on the USS Tucker as a storekeeper. In 1940, Ellingwood was transferred as a storekeeper to the USS Shaw shortly before it was bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. According to Ellingwood: \"I heard someone shout, \"We're being attacked.\" We all ran to our battle stations. Mine was on the bridge.\" On top of the Shaw, he viewed the Japanese attacking Battleship Row, where he stated that \"one of the most sickening things I watched was the USS Oklahoma capsize. To see this big ship roll over and see it go belly up, knowing hundreds of soldiers could be trapped inside, made me feel ill… made me feel useless.\" While Ellingwood ended up in the water after two bombs had struck the Shaw, he spent hours after the attack helping wounded soldiers swim to shore and removing the bodies of his former shipmates.\n \nAfter surviving the attack on the USS Shaw , Ellingwood served as the Acting Pay Clerk on the USS Dixie and the USS Fomalhaut until he attended flight training from 1942 to 1945. Yet in September 1946, Ellingwood joined the Supply Corps -- a career path which remained with him for the rest of his time in the Navy. By the time of his compulsory retirement in 1966, Ellingwood had attained the rank of Commander and his final duty in the service was as a Contracting Officer with the Office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, USN. He retired on August 31, 1966. After leaving the service, Ellingwood worked at the Newport News Shipyard for an additional 17 years before officially retiring in 1984. Ellingwood passed away at the age of 90 at his home on June 19, 2008, and his ashes were buried at sea off the coast of Virginia at the request of his second wife, Gavin Ellingwood.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection pertains to Commander Leonard D. Ellingwood who had served as an Acting Pay Clerk with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ellingwood was stationed on the USS Shaw during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Shortly after surviving the attack, Ellingwood was transferred to the Naval Supply Corps, where he had remained until his honorable discharge in 1966. This collection includes Ellingwood's official Naval personnel documents from 1936 to 1966, newspapers in which Ellingwood recounts his experiences during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and various photographs of Ellingwood in Naval uniforms.
