A. Patti was a writer, historian and retired Army lieutenant colonel best known for his work with Ho Chi Minh 1945 and his subsequent 1980 book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? Prelude to America's Albatross was published in 1980 and became known as a critical work on the study of politics in Asia. Patti passed away in Winter Park in 1998 at age 84 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.","Processed by Alexandra Olsen, April Karlene Anderson and Katie Seeler; finding aid prepared by April Karlene Anderson, Jonathon Teasley and Katie Seeler. Bolton's work began in South Carolina where we have documentation of a few projects he worked on in 1936. In the late 1930's and early 1940's, Bolton moved to Florida to begin work designing and repaving airports for the Navy during WWII. The majority of the collection includes records from his work with the Navy including Banana River, Saufley field, Osceola and Witting Field North and South. Juanita Jane (Bolton) was born in 1922, moved to Lakeland in 1939 to attend school at Florida Southern College. Juanita received her secretary certificate in 1941. Mr. Bolton met Juanita Jane when she worked for him as a secretary at Macasphalt and they later married. Juanita was active in Bolton's companies as she held positions including Secretary-Treasurer and Vice President of one of Macasphalt's spin off companies. Juanita Jane Bolton died in May of 2009. In 1955, Bolton became the owner of Macasphalt. And in 1957 work began on the Daytona Speedway. The Speedway was completed in 1959 and the collection includes pictures of the first practice run. In the mid to late 1950's Bolton began dividing the company into smaller sub companies which he divided among family and friends. According to Glenn C Thompson, Bolton's two daughters (Betty and Glynnie) married and their husbands were set up with their own company with the expectation they would take care of Bolton's daughters. Bolton was long known for using local materials (like sand, crushed stone, and coquina shells) to build asphalt roads in Florida. Bolton retired in 1971 and died in 1974. His legacy lives on,\nhowever, in the form of the A.P. \"Pat\" Bolton award for excellence in paving","This collection spans the date range from 1936 – 1972. However, there are a few personal documents dating to 1854 and 1905. The primary scope of the collection pertains to Bolton's work in World War II and his work with the Daytona Speedway. There are a few ancillary projects in addition to these. There is little information about specific jobs between Bolton's work in WWII and his work on the Daytona Speedway. There is also very little information about specific jobs after the Daytona Speedway project ending in 1959. The lack of information on specific jobs after Bolton's work on the Daytona Speedway may be attributed to Bolton's efforts to divide the company up between his son-in-laws and his friends. The end to the Florida land boom, the 1926 hurricane, and the Great Depression resulted in the financial failure of Floranada. In 1929 Oakland Park became its own city with Hawkins elected as mayor. Having originally been elected mayor of Floranada / Oakland Park in 1926, he served as mayor for 28 years in total. He retired as Mayor of Oakland Park after multiple temporary attempts, as he had been reelected due to popular demand.","Hawkins had one of the biggest vegetable farms in Broward County and personally provided food and money to those who needed it during the Depression. He was also a successful cattle rancher who at one time possessed nearly 3,000 cattle and was the first rancher in the area to raise Brahma cattle. Additionally, he owned a packinghouse at NE 34th Court by the Florida East Coast Railway. According to the Florida Daily News and Evening Sentinel newspaper in 1929, during Prohibition, Hawkins did have liquor in his home and publically announced an invitation to the infamous mobster Al Capone to visit Oakland Park.","Hawkins was the founder and director of the Wilton Manors National Bank and also had a Masonic Lodge named in his honor. Joseph Dewey Hawkins died on November 15, 1958. "],"prefercite_html_tesm":["\u003cp\u003eJ.
