Bolton's work began in South Carolina where we have documentation of a few projects he worked on in 1936. In the late 1930's and early 1940's, Bolton moved to Florida to begin work designing and repaving airports for the Navy during WWII. The majority of the collection includes records from his work with the Navy including Banana River, Saufley field, Osceola and Witting Field North and South. Juanita Jane (Bolton) was born in 1922, moved to Lakeland in 1939 to attend school at Florida Southern College. Juanita received her secretary certificate in 1941. Mr. Bolton met Juanita Jane when she worked for him as a secretary at Macasphalt and they later married. Juanita was active in Bolton's companies as she held positions including Secretary-Treasurer and Vice President of one of Macasphalt's spin off companies. Juanita Jane Bolton died in May of 2009. In 1955, Bolton became the owner of Macasphalt. And in 1957 work began on the Daytona Speedway. The Speedway was completed in 1959 and the collection includes pictures of the first practice run. In the mid to late 1950's Bolton began dividing the company into smaller sub companies which he divided among family and friends. According to Glenn C Thompson, Bolton's two daughters (Betty and Glynnie) married and their husbands were set up with their own company with the expectation they would take care of Bolton's daughters. Bolton was long known for using local materials (like sand, crushed stone, and coquina shells) to build asphalt roads in Florida. Bolton retired in 1971 and died in 1974. However, there are a few personal documents dating to 1854 and 1905. The primary scope of the collection pertains to Bolton's work in World War II and his work with the Daytona Speedway. There are a few ancillary projects in addition to these. There is little information about specific jobs between Bolton's work in WWII and his work on the Daytona Speedway. There is also very little information about specific jobs after the Daytona Speedway project ending in 1959. The lack of information on specific jobs after Bolton's work on the Daytona Speedway may be attributed to Bolton's efforts to divide the company up between his son-in-laws and his friends. She had been an avid photographer ever since her father took her to the darkroom of an old Army buddy, and she saw strips of film hanging on a line. She graduated from Garber High School in 1934, and then went on to Tonkawa College before receiving her Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1941. Mansfield was a reporter, writer, and editor for the college newspaper, which demonstrated how her fascination for photography followed her throughout her educational years. It was an article in Popular Photography Magazine about British military women photographers and their work in aerial photography that inspired her to enlist in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (W.A.A.C.) when World War II began.
World War II Service - Mansfield enlisted as a W.A.A.C. on October 17, 1942. She attended basic training at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa until February 1943 and then transferred to Lowry Field Photo School in Denver, Colorado. She was one of fifty who made up the first all-women class to be trained as aerial photo technicians. The women did better academically than the men who doubted them, as well as handled the cameras and darkroom work well. After graduating in April 1943, Mansfield went to Felts Field in Spokane, Washington for further training. While there, W.A.A.C. was converted to full status as a branch of the United States Army and became the Women's Army Corps (W.A.C.) in July 1943. Mansfield was also stationed at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs, Colorado and Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia before being assigned overseas work in May 1944. Throughout her service, Mansfield kept her Graflex 4x5 Pacemaker Speed Graphic camera and a supply of personal film provided by her father, who was incredibly supportive of her photographic endeavors throughout her life. She used these to document her experience at each location in the states, photographing her friends and surroundings. The pictures Mansfield took feature the women training, completing their work, and socializing."," Mansfield was assigned to the 8 th Air Force under James Doolittle stationed in High Wycombe, England. The codename for the camp was "Pinetree," with Mansfield interchanging between the two location names in documents and on her pictures. The majority of the correspondence in the collection is from her time in England, where she described to her parents her visit to London and conditions at the camp. Food was a common topic for Mansfield, as well as conditions in the lab. Mansfield continued to take personal photographs, documenting the English countryside and life in the military huts where the women were housed. She celebrated Victory in Europe Day at this station, and there are numerous pictures of the service members rejoicing. Though the war on the western front was over, Mansfield stated in a letter to her parents that W.A.C.s were essential for the army of occupation and were scheduled to transfer to Germany."," Mansfield was then transferred to the 9 th Air Force stationed in Bad Kissingen, Germany to work with the 13 th Photo Tech Unit. This resort town was occupied by the United States Army, and Mansfield noted the barbed wire and boarded up shops in letters. The lab was in a large, empty house and took considerable time to construct. Before it was finished, Mansfield worked mainly in the contact printing room or other labs in the region that needed assistance. She mentioned in letters that she and her peers often had to prove they could do the work, as many officers seemed doubtful. This testified to the sexism the W.A.C.s experienced, and that they did their job, and did it well, regardless of the obstacles. Mansfield continued her routine of taking personal photographs, which included several pictures of local Germans that accompanied the usual shots of friends and surroundings. She remained in Germany from July to November 1945, then returned to the United States after being honorably discharged from the military.","Post-War U.S. Air Force Service - After being discharged, Mansfield remained a civilian for fifteen months. Most of that time was spent helping a friend, Bertha Brownback. The two had become very close friends while in the military together but towards the end of their service, Bertha found herself pregnant without a husband. This meant she was automatically discharged from the military. When Mansfield returned to the United States, she moved with Bertha and the baby to Philadelphia where she worked for a short while with a photofinishing company. They then moved to Oklahoma because Mansfield wanted to be near family again. Soon after, Bertha died in a car accident, leaving Mansfield guardian of her child. She arranged for a couple related to her to adopt the baby, which freed her to reenlist in the military. This entire situation served as a testament to Mansfield's character; she was willing to put her career on hold to help a friend in need. It is this quality of love and friendship that stood out most strongly in her photography."," In September 1946, Mansfield re-enlisted in the W.A.C. where she worked in Photo Labs at U.S. Bases and in Germany. When the U.S. Air Force became a separate service, she became part of the Women in the Air Force. Mansfield was stationed in Erding, Germany from 1952 to 1955. While there, she toured Europe, visiting Berlin, Paris, and Rome as well as the scenic countryside of Germany and Austria. She took numerous photographs and assembled them into a scrapbook, accompanied with historical commentary and descriptions of events. Mansfield was even able to revisit Bad Kissingen, Germany, where she had been stationed during the war, and commented on its marked difference in appearance."," Mansfield remained in the U.S. Air Force until her retirement in 1973, after thirty years of military service where she earned the rank of Senior Master Sergeant(E-8). Throughout her military documents, Mansfield received numerous letters of praise and strong recommendations based on her work ethic. Because of her strong record, Mansfield was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal upon retirement, which is the highest award for military service during peacetime. This demonstrated to Mansfield that her hard work was appreciated, and she was very proud of it.","Retirement - Shortly before retirement, in 1970, Mansfield met Lorraine Caddy and the two became best friends. They decided that they liked each other enough to live together, and while Caddy was still in the military, they moved wherever she was stationed until her retirement in 1977. They decided to settle in Oklahoma outside Oklahoma City due to Mansfield's familial connection to the area. Mansfield returned to the University of Central Oklahoma in 1981 to complete a Bachelor of Science in Photo Journalism and a Master's Degree in Journalism in 1983. Photography remained her first love throughout her life, and she was an active member of the Oklahoma Camera Club since 1963. Mansfield passed away Sunday, December 30, 2007, at the age of 92. She is survived by her companion of 37 years, Lorraine Caddy.","This collection was donated by Lorraine A. Caddy. The collection was acquired by the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience on September 10, 2008.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives in July 2022.","Processed Summer and Fall 2017","This collection relates to Charlotte D. Mansfield who served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II in the European Theater as a photographer and photograph processor. She subsequently retired from the U.S. Air Force. This collection contains documents, photographs, scrapbooks, and artifacts. The documents include personal correspondence, military records, newspaper clippings, newsletters, magazines, and certificates for military service. Various military medals and patches, mugs from U.S. Air Force service, and Graflex 4x5 Pacemaker Speed Graphic camera make up the artifacts. There are eight scrapbooks that Mansfield assembled documenting her military service, primarily overseas, both during World War II and after. Photographs make up the majority of the collection, with one box of loose photographs in separate folders and five archival scrapbooks filled with pictures. There are also four enlarged portraits of Mansfield.","All requests for permission to quote, publish, broadcast or otherwise reproduce from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the Associate Dean for Special Collections & Archives. She was part of the first all-women graduating class from Lowry Field Photo School in Colorado, where she was trained to be a photo technician that developed primarily aerial shots in photography labs. Mansfield was stationed at various locations throughout the United States before being transferred to lab work overseas in England and Germany. By this time, W.A.A.C. had transitioned to Women's Army Corps (W.A.C.). Throughout her military service, Mansfield took numerous personal photographs that featured her friends and surroundings. They provide an unparalleled amount of insight into the private lives of W.A.C.s as they negotiated what it meant to serve in World War II. Mansfield reenlisted after the war, eventually becoming part of the Women in the Air Force (W.A.F.), and retired in 1973. Formed by a few visionary high school band directors from across Florida, the FBA sought to promote interest in high school bands and band contests during an era where few schools had bands but interest was growing, and to strengthen the professional standing of the state's band directors. The FBA sponsored a
single State Festival for several years. In the late 1940's, the Festival became large enough that the state was divided into six geographical Districts, and District Contests were devised to serve as qualifiers for bands attending the State Contest. Since then, additional growth resulted in 10
Districts, then to 14, then to 15 in 1982, to 17 in 1987, and to 19 in 1995. There is still 19 districts.
Throughout the years, the FBA has managed state- and district-level band festivals, clinics, and other events, ensuring that music remained in the public school curriculum and maintaining high musical standards for students. In 1966, the FBA completed an amicable merger with the Florida Association of Bandmasters, the equivalent organization for African-American schools
prior to integration. The FABD had formed in 1941with Leander Kirksey as the first president. He was followed by George H. Hill (1955-1960) and James W. Wilson (1960-1966). Wilson later served as president of the FBA from 1974-1975. Early organizers and leaders of the FBA include some giants in the school band field, including first president Major Ed Chenette, P.J. Gustat, Browne Greaton Cole, and John J. Heney. For a complete list of presidents visit https://fba.flmusiced.org/about/history. FBA eventually became a component organization of the Florida Music Education Association.
In addition, the FBA had a relationship with the Florida High School Activities Association, from whom the FBA, and their associated events, received funding. John Joseph Heney, Sr. (1903-1978) was a percussionist, music educator, and historian. He played with numerous bands throughout his career, most notably the John Phillip Sousa Band during its final six years. In addition to playing professionally, Heney taught at numerous schools in the Florida area, including Ketterlinus High School, Stetson University, and DeLand High School, where he stayed for thirty-two years. He was a founder of the FBA and instrumental in starting the archives. Included are governance-related materials such as constitutions and bylaws, as well as informational bulletins; financial records; minutes of state, district, and committee meetings; and
correspondence to and from Association leadership. Of note for genealogists are annual membership directories and membership applications from the 1940 into the 1960s that include a resume and photograph of each applicant. The collection also includes detailed records of band contests and festivals, with records pertaining to the administrative and logistical efforts as
well as results. Other documentary forms found in the collection are a small number of musical scores and cassette tapes of performances.","The records have been arranged in eight series, six of which have been further arranged in subseries.","Series 1: Bulletins, 1941-2010. Nine feet two inches or 22 boxes. Bulletins includes both State (1941-2010) and District (1946-1995) arranged separately and chronologically. The content of the bulletins changed slightly over the years, and may contain general information for the membership, meeting times, meeting agendas or minutes, and contest results. Some issues are missing.","Series 2: Constitutions, Bylaws, Handbooks, Manuals, & Proclamations, 1939-2010. 20 inches or 4 boxes. Arranged by year. Copies of the current constitution or by-law were often printed in an annual handbook.
Series 3: Contests and other events, 1936-1996. Twenty feet 5 inches or 49 boxes. Arranged in five subseries – Contests (1936-1996), Adjudication (1962-1992), Clinics (1943-1993), Music Lists (1954-1994), and Music Scores, n.d. Each subseries is arranged chronologically. Records include documents relating to events sponsored or managed by FBA, including district and state contests/festivals, the All-Star Marching Band, and All-State competitions.","Series 4: Correspondence, 1927-1994. Twelve feet, one inch or twenty-nine boxes. This series was maintained in original order (as found in 2018) which included materials by Correspondent (1927-1994), and more routine Business Correspondence by year (1948-1993). It contains a variety of letters from FBA presidents, executive secretaries, and other related people or organizations about finances, meetings, activities, events, and association history.
Series 5, Financial Records, 1939-2008. Two feet, eleven inches or seven boxes, arranged by year. Documents include ledgers, reports, and budgets at the state and district levels. Financial information can also be found in Bulletins and Minutes.","Series 6, Meetings, 1938-2009. Eight feet, nine inches or twenty-one boxes, arranged in four subseries and then chronologically. State and district meetings were held by officers and reflect decisions made for the group. State Minutes, 1938-1993 and District Minutes, 1945-2009 sometimes include agendas, but they typically describe the events of the meeting and may include a list of attendees, a statement of the issues considered by the participants, and related responses or decisions for the issues. The Committees, 1950-1993 minutes, arranged alphabetically by committee name are not a complete record of all committees. Some minutes were never filed with the main office. Some minutes of the committees are recorded in the bulletins. Decisions made at the business meeting attended by the general membership are found within the Summer Conventions, 1968-1993.","Series 7, Membership, 1949-2000. Three feet, ten inches or nine boxes. The Membership Applications, 1949-1985 from the earlier years often include a photograph and resume-like information. Directories, 1946-2000 are the compilation of information into a published booklet. The News includes some obituaries and newspaper clipping of some members.","Series 8, Related Materials, 1940-1974, n.d. Twenty inches, or five boxes. This last series includes materials by and about John J. Heney, Sr. Heney was a member of the Sousa Band Fraternal Society. Several boxes of materials reflect his involvement with the John Philip Sousa Band, and his interest in preserving Sousa's memory after the band leader's death. The Photographs include mostly albums of marching bands, but also of some band directors.","Permission to publish materials from the Florida Bandmasters Association Records must be obtained from the Florida Bandmasters Association.
