Shaw grew up in Brooklyn, New York where she worked as a telephone operator during World War II before enlisting in the U.S. Cadet Nurses Corps in 1944. She enrolled at the School of Nursing at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia and also received training at Children's Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC. From 1946-1948, Shaw worked as a nurse at the Veterans Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In the postwar era, Shaw continued her career as nurse in New York State and later Houston, Texas before retiring in 1987 to Florida.
