He coached three youth basketball teams for Calvary Methodist Church in Lakewood, Ohio. Throughout the war and after, Busch kept in touch with the men he had coached. Some letters were returned to Busch, and he kept track of the men he had coached who were killed in action or went missing.\n One of the men who was killed in action was PFC Eugene Oesterle. Oesterle was born March 4, 1925, and he received most of his training at Camp Blanding and Camp Robinson. Oesterle was an infantryman with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was sent overseas in June of 1944 and was first stationed in Italy. He then moved through France, Belgium, and Germany. His last letter to Busch was sent from Alsace-Lorraine on February 13, 1945. On March 24, the 30th Infantry Regiment crossed the Rhine River. On March 27, Oesterle was killed in action after being struck in the right arm and leg by German shell fragments.\n Busch also wrote to and received letters from Corporal John Sprosty who served with the 61st Squadron, 39th Bomb Group. Sprosty served as a tail gunner on B-29 #44-69895, which had taken off from Tinian on a bombing mission. During their flight, they were rammed by a Japanese kamikaze pilot and crashed somewhere at sea. Sprosty was declared missing on April 28, 1945. Some of the crew was sighted in rafts, but due to poor weather, they could not be rescued. By the time the weather had cleared, they had disappeared. Sprosty was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.\n Busch passed away on November 9, 2002.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","Link to Eugene Oesterle's grave record: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/172010234/eugene-c-oesterle","Link to John C. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam? The correspondence was carefully collected, arranged, and preserved by Virginia who was a senior in high school when she began writing to several of these young men. Virginia's letters to the servicemen were originally handwritten but she carefully typed and preserved a copy on onion skin paper which she housed in brown folders with each man's name, rank, and location.\nAfter graduating from high school, Virginia held the position of secretary to the Traffic Manager at Honnegers' Feeds located in Fairbury, Illinois. She was active in her local church and community, which she writes about in her letters. Because Virginia and the servicemen were united by geographic location, the letters represent a wide range of American military experience during World War II. The six men include: Norman Funk, a Naval airman from Roanoke, Illinois stationed in Jacksonville, FL; Roy Funk, an Army serviceman from Gridley, Illinois stationed in Camp Crowder and Camp Polk; Art Hartman, an Army serviceman from Strawn, Illinois stationed in Camp Lee, Virginia; Raymond Johnson, a Naval serviceman from Illinois; Howard Sauder, an Army sergeant from Roanoke, Illinois stationed in Aleutian Islands; Albert Steffen, a Naval serviceman from Elgin, Illinois stationed in Okinawa.
