After the war, he wrote a book about his experiences titled  Sitting it Out.   In his interview, he compares his experiences to many Hollywood movies. He also describes being Jewish and a part of a Young Men's Hebrew Association in the POW camp in Germany.\n Born on April 11, 1917, in Texas, David Westheimer graduated from San Jacinto High school in 1933 and worked for the Houston Post as a journalist from 1940 to 1960. Moving to Los Angeles to write full time, he was the author of fifteen novels and one non-fiction book. Benson was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 as a Technician 5th Grade and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, General Headquarters, United States Army Forces Pacific in the Philippine Islands (PTO) in 1944 and 1946. Benson received his Honorable Discharge on January 18, 1946. After his service, Benson returned to the upper Peninsula of Michigan and attended college at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, where he received a degree in engineering. He worked for Ford Motor Company and then Westinghouse in Lima, Ohio, where he was living during his retirement. Benson married his second wife, Yolanda Benson and moved to Texas until his death. Benson was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944 as a Technician 5th Grade and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, General Headquarters, United States Army Forces Pacific in the Philippine Islands (PTO) in 1944 and 1946. Benson received his Honorable Discharge on January 18, 1946. After his service, Benson returned to the upper Peninsula of Michigan and attended college at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, where he received a degree in engineering. He worked for Ford Motor Company and then Westinghouse in Lima, Ohio, where he was living during his retirement. Benson married his second wife, Yolanda Benson and moved to Texas until his death.
