He was nicknamed \"Sonny.\" He attended University of Florida and enlisted in Spring of 1942. Bail completed bombardier school and basic training at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas and air crew training at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was assigned to crew 35C, 326th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bomb Group with the Eighth Air Force and was stationed in England. He flew two missions over France before he was shot down over Hannover, Germany and killed in action on July 26, 1943. The B-17F, 42-3264, crashed near Bremen, west of River Elbe; Missing Air Crew Report 193. His collection consists of correspondence from Sonny to his parents and his sister, Grace \"Sissy\" Bail, from 1941-1943. These letters contain Bail's reactions to Pearl Harbor and the War as a student at the University of Florida, Bail's description of Air Corps Bombadier training, the scenery in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his trip to England via Bangor, Maine. Later letters came from the field in England and from Bail's permanent squadron assignment in England. His letters from England from May through July 1943 describe military censorship of letters, problems with receiving mail, boredom, traveling to London on days off, entertainment (such as a 4th of July celebration and baseball games), and flying training. The letters also contain inquiries of home, asking parents to send a camera and candy, and reminisces of home.","\nOther correspondence includes letters that Bail received from his parents, mostly discussing the homefront, vacation in the mountains of North Carolina, and how to send packages overseas. Also included is correspondence between Bail's sister Grace \"Sissy\" and their parents. One letter describes Sissy's and Dr. Campbell's (President of Florida State College for Women) reactions to Pearl Harbor, and another is a 1944 interview which Sissy completed with Vincent, a tail gunner from Bail's original B-17 crew who was shot down but escaped through the French Underground. Vincent recalls stories about Bail from before his death. Sissy then sent the interview in letter format to her parents. Valente was born on August 3, 1921 in New York, New York, originally staying in an apartment in Brooklyn. His parents Ciro and Mary were Italian immigrants from the early 1900s, his father being a music professor and maestro while his mother worked as a finisher in a factory and was a member of the International Ladies' Garments Workers' Union. He had five siblings, however the first sibling died as an infant. His sisters Rosalie, otherwise known as Sally, and Carmela, also known as Lilly, both worked on Wall Street. His younger sister, Gina, was a musical prodigy, who started a prestigious musical career at the age of eight. Ralph was also a musician, having experience in playing the accordion and being the leader of his own musical trio. The family later moved to an apartment in Carnegie Hall.\n On December 12, 1943, Valente enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of twenty-two. He started introductory training at Camp Upton, New York with his unit as a Private. During his training, he attained 185 points out of 200, earning the qualification of expert rifleman. On January 5, 1944, Valente and his unit transferred from Camp Upton to Camp Blanding, Florida two days later for advanced training. He was assigned to heavy artillery, which he and his unit were to maintain and operate both heavy machine guns and mortar guns. During this part of his training, he also studied for officer's training school, with the hopes of becoming an officer in his unit. However, he was not able to attain a rank past Private. During bivouac, he started having stomach problems, becoming so severe to the point where he was admitted to the hospital in Camp Blanding on April 26. However, the hospital staff could not find the source of the stomach issues, and he was released and transferred to a different unit on May 13. On May 27, Valente returned from bivouac and started studying to be a gunner or assistant gunner until he received orders to go on leave. \n During his training, Valente took every opportunity presented to him to write back home to his parents and sisters. In some cases, whenever his wife Millie visited the camp, she would often write to the Valente family instead.\n He returned home on leave until June 26, when he was sent to Fort George G. Meade to prepare for deployment in Europe. He arrived in England, where his unit was camped near London, and were later deployed to France. There, he fought in France as a member of Company A of the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, where he was wounded during fighting when his division, as a part of General Patton's Third Army, was taking part in pushing the Germans out of Northern France. He was awarded the Purple Heart on October 13th and was sent back to the front after recovering from his wounds. On November 9th, he was severly wounded in action during military operations along the Seille River in France. He passed away from his wounds on November 24th, 1944. He is buried along side his wife, Amelia, in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, NY.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to Ralph J. After his service in the European Theater during World War II, Patti was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS – precursor to CIA) in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, Patti was named head of a secret OSS mission under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt designed to support anti-colonialism in Asia. Part of Patti's mission was to befriend Ho Chi Minh and train Ho's men to fight the occupying Japanese forces in Vietnam. Patti was later pulled out of Vietnam by the United States in 1945 but he continued his friendly relations with Ho and his representatives. After his retirement, Patti worked closely with federal agencies in creating plans for civil governance in the event of a catastrophic attack on the US. Patti also became a well-known writer, recounting his work with Ho in 1945 and the changing face of politics in the Indochina region. Held for publication in the 1950s due to its controversial subject matter on communism, Patti's book, Why Viet Nam?
