In 1933, she graduated from Brewster High School and attended Florida State College for Women (now FSU) where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1937. In college she was the editor of  The Florida Flambeau . After her graduation, Bowman became one of the first three women admitted to the University of Florida Law School. She earned a Master of Arts from the University of Florida and did post-graduate work at the University of Maryland. \nHazel taught school and worked as a welfare worker until WWII when she became a recreation worker. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Hazel Bowman joined the Signal Corps where she worked in code-breaking in Virginia for a year.  From 1943 to 1945, Hazel Bowman served as an assistant procurement officer with the American Red Cross, in the China, Burma, India theater. She was stationed in  Dibrugarh, Assam, India. In India, Bowman also operated several social clubs India to entertain homesick American troops. After the war, Hazel worked as a laboratory technician, a freelance writer, editor, and indexer. She also worked as registrar, director of student personnel, and professor at various universities and colleges, including the University of Tampa, Townsend State, and the University of Maryland. After moving to Florida, she retired from The Vanguard School, Lake Wales. Hazel Bowman passed away in Mulberry, Florida on October 12, 2009. Instead of a burial, Hazel donated her body to the University of Florida Health Science Center.","Eunice Claire Sloat (nee Bowman) was born on January 12, 1921, in Brewster, FL, to Joseph M. and Annie T. Bowman and died on November 1, 2015. Eunice was Hazel Bowman's sister. Regular combat operations by the 97th Bombardment Group, VIII Bomber Command, began on August 17, 1942, when the 97th Bombardment Group flew 12 B-17Es on the first  heavy bomber mission of the war from RAF Polebrook, attacking the Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yards in France. The group was assigned to the 8th, 12th, and 15th Air Forces. The 97th Bomb Group was the oldest bomb group in the European Theater (ETO) and the first group to fly three hundred missions. The last mission ended on April 26, 1945 (the 483rd mission). One of the most successful bomb groups, their diaries and journals outline both successful and failed missions alike. Born in Houston, Texas on August 5, 1915, Westheimer spent his early life in San Francisco, CA and joined the United States Army Air Corps on November 19, 1940. Westheimer served in both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, Westheimer participated in the battle of Iwo Jima and remained there until the end of the war. During the Korean War, he was stationed about seventeen miles from Tokyo, Japan. He was married to Jenna Rose Westheimer. He graduated New Rochelle High School.  Prior to joining the U.S. Army, he worked as a civilian courier for the U.S. Army.  He entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 16, 1943 and attended Basic training in Miami Beach, FL, Armament training at Buckley and Lowry Fields in Colorado, and gunnery school at Kingman Field, AZ. Mckee Sr. was assigned to the 324th Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group, and was sent to England on December 31, 1943.  The B-17 on which McKee Sr. served was combat damaged and crashed into the North Sea on March 29, 1944 on Mckee Sr's seven mission.  The entire crew was rescued by the German Navy.  McKee Sr. became as prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria. He was liberated in Bramall, Bavaria on May 3, 1945 by the 13th U.S. Armored Division and returned to the U.S. on June 12, 1945.  After the war, Mckee Sr. worked as a civilian fireman at Fr. Slocum, NY. He devoted the remainder of his life to lobbying for recognition and compensation of former U.S. prisoners of war.","Mckee Sr. passed away on January 16, 1996 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to William Edward McKee Sr. who served as a sergeant with the 324th Squadron, 91st Heavy Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II. He graduated New Rochelle High School.  Prior to joining the U.S. Army, he worked as a civilian courier for the U.S. Army.  He entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps on February 16, 1943 and attended Basic training in Miami Beach, FL, Armament training at Buckley and Lowry Fields in Colorado, and gunnery school at Kingman Field, AZ. Mckee Sr. was assigned to the 324th Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group, and was sent to England on December 31, 1943.  The B-17 on which McKee Sr. served was combat damaged and crashed into the North Sea on March 29, 1944 on Mckee Sr's seven mission.  The entire crew was rescued by the German Navy.  McKee Sr. became as prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria. He was liberated in Bramall, Bavaria on May 3, 1945 by the 13th U.S. Armored Division and returned to the U.S. on June 12, 1945.  After the war, Mckee Sr. worked as a civilian fireman at Fr. Slocum, NY.
