More than 40,000 American men refused to fight during World War II. Citing principled opposition, they declared themselves conscientious objectors. Rejecting combat duty, nearly 12,000 men entered Civilian Public Service (CPS) with the intent to perform \"work of national importance\" as an alternative to combat duty. The CPS program was set up by members of the historic peace churches (Mennonites, Brethren, and Quakers) and participated in by pacifists from other churches, of no specific religious persuasion, and, in the case of a few, no persuasion except not to fight in that particular war. CPS men worked as aides in mental hospitals, volunteered as smoke jumpers in forest fires, and participated in grueling medical and scientific experiments.  Frazer and O'Sullivan use the oral histories of 15 CPS men and two of their wives to illuminate their experience during World War II. ","Heather T. He moved to Tampa, FL at an early age and was educated at Hillsboro High School. He attended Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC and graduated in 1929. He received his theological education at Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA in 1934. His first ministry was as an Assistant Pastor in Wilmington, NC where he met his wife, Marguerite Crawford. Thompson later moved to Miami, FL where he lived when entering active duty as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army on April 7, 1942. Thompson served in New Guinea and the Philippines before his discharge but continued in the U.S. Army Reserves until retirement in 1968. Thompson became the pastor of the Palmetto Presbyterian Church, Palmetto, FL in March 1955. Thompson passed away in Manatee, FL on August 18, 1993.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to U.S. Army Chaplain William Knight Thompson who served in New Guinea at Oro Bay and the Philippine Islands in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After active duty service, Thompson remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until his retirement with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1958. The collection includes photographs, documents, and ephemera.  Many photographs include native peoples of New Guinea. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on March 25, 1943  and completed pilot's training.  He flew C-47 transport planes with the 18th Troop Carrier Squadron in North Africa, Sicily, India, Burma, and Southern France. He flew missions that supported partisans in Northern Italy from January to May 1945.  He was discharged from active service on January 18, 1947 with the rank of Major. He continued to serve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves. McCusker III also flew the following aircraft: PT-17, BT-63, AT-11, AT-9, T-28, C-45,  and C-46. Because of the number of missions flown, he was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and Distinguished Flying Cross.
