Johnson was born on a farm in Benson, Minnesota, in 1906. He was\nconsidered one of the outstanding agricultural forecasters in the nation. Earning a Bachelor of\nArts degree in Science, History, and English in 1928 from Gustavious Adolphus College in St.\nPeter, Minnesota, Johnson minored in meteorology. Johnson's professors advised him to pursue a\ncareer in weather forecasting. He took that advice. He was a forecaster for forty-\ntwo years, thirty-five of which were in Florida. He was the meteorologist in charge of the\nFederal-State Agricultural Weather Service.\nFollowing a brief assignment as a U.S. Weather Bureau observer in Huron, South Dakota,\nJohnson was transferred to the bureau's headquarters in Washington, D.C. to work in the\nHurricane Forecasting Center for the Eastern United States from Maine to Florida, including the\nGulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean. While in Jacksonville, receiving advanced\nforecasting training, a forecasting and hurricane center was established there and Johnson was\nselected to assist in developing it.\nIn 1935 he transferred to Lakeland to take part in and help develop another newly-established\nweather program in the State of Florida – a joint Federal-State Agricultural Weather Service. His\nvalue to the hurricane forecasting section of the weather service and to the Federal-State\nAgricultural Weather Service resulted in him spending three years shuttling between forecasting\nhurricanes in the summer and freezes in the winter. He was called to hurricane forecasting in\n1938, but Johnson returned to Lakeland and the agricultural weather service as meteorologist in\ncharge. But his prowess as \"one of the top forecasters\" demanded his temporary duty in the\nHurricane Tracking Center, by then located in Miami. Like any other thriving and successful\nbusiness venture, the Federal-State Agricultural Weather Service expanded. It grew into a\nnetwork of eight field stations and 400 temperature survey stations, and Johnson was required to\nremain in Lakeland year-round to administer the service. His accuracy in forecasting freezes was\nestablished during those years, and he is considered one of the outstanding weather forecasters in\nthe nation. He not only earned the respect of those in the citrus industry, but of those of cousin\nagricultural industries, including vegetable and cattle.\nWhile at the agricultural weather service, Johnson was responsible for developing a widespread\ndaily broadcast of frost warning bulletins carried statewide by a radio network. \"Probably no\nindividual associated with the citrus industry was better known to growers and production\nmanagers – especially during the cold months,\" is the way Johnson was described by R.E.\nNorris. Not only was Johnson providing \"unusual accuracy\" in forecasting temperature\nminimums and duration of temperatures dangerous to citrus, he also assembled information and\ndata regarding grove protection during periods of frost and developed data regarding prospective\ngrove locations and the minimum temperatures the potential grove could expect.\nFrom 1943 through 1970, he was in charge of the Lakeland office and responsible for the\nagricultural forecasts during the winter months. Johnson developed a daily broadcast of frost\nwarning bulletins carried throughout the state by many radio stations. He established a teletype\nnetwork that was made available to growers. He administered field districts and hundreds of\ntemperature survey stations which helped depict minimum temperature characteristics of the\nstate. He also compiled data on the effects of various temperatures on the growth of citrus and\nvegetables. That data became the basis for Florida, Texas, and California programs and\nprotective measures to prevent agricultural damage.\nImpending frost of the nature that occasionally settles over the state during peak winter\nharvesting months are not as feared by citrus men today as they once were, thanks to the life's\nwork of \"Mr. Forecaster,\" Warren O. Johnson. From 1943 until his retirement, Johnson was\nassociated jointly with the Federal and State governments as the meteorologist in charge of the\nFederal-State Agricultural Weather Service. \"I think that he had a better feel for what was going\nto occur on those cold nights than the meteorologists of today, even though they must have had at\ntheir command very sophisticated technology as compared to the Johnson Days,\" wrote C.A.\nRoot, vice-president of Lykes Brothers citrus division.\nMany of the trails Johnson blazed into weather forecasting were particularly invaluable to the\ncitrus industry by affording advance warning to growers when the mercury was expected to drop\ninto hazardous temperature ranges. The teletype network and communications outlets to help\ngrowers keep tabs on developing weather conditions pioneered by Johnson are, for the most part,\nstill in use today.","This collection has been processed at a basic level in an effort to make this\ncollection available in the shortest amount of time. News Clippings document Julian Nally's community activities. Photographs show family and friends, such as, his sister Mary Lee with her husband. Several images show the interior of Nally home in New York. Onie Monroe, a household employee is shown with his family, and several photographs show Edward Nally including a small framed image. Photographs of Julian Nally show him at various ages and those with Margaret often show them with other individuals. Postcards were clearly kept for their images and show a variety of places presumably visited by Nally. He wrote not only on botanical matters but also poetry and short stories, and examples of his work may be found in this series."],"_nest_path_":"/components#1","_nest_parent_":"b82ed642664903c83a19b1b0","_root_":"b82ed642664903c83a19b1b0","timestamp":"2026-07-09T03:02:45.647Z","collection":{"numFound":1,"start":0,"numFoundExact":true,"docs":[{"id":"b82ed642664903c83a19b1b0","title_ssm":["Michael A. The contents of each series or subseries have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically, unless otherwise noted.","Born in 1918, Charlotte Edwards Maguire was a pediatrician and early supporter of the FSU College of Medicine. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Memphis Teachers College in 1940 and her medical degree from The University of Arkansas in 1944, she opened her first pediatrics practice in Orlando, FL. She served as the director of the Orlando Child Health Clinic, chief of staff for the Central Florida Division of Children's Home Society Florida, and was the first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society in 1952. Dr. Maguire was a pioneer for women in the medical industry, but was almost prevented from pursuing the field due to prejudice from the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Often singled out for being the only woman in her field (and was often referred to as \"Girl Doctor\" in newspapers), Dr. Maguire carved out a niche for herself and began to influence the medical industry in Florida.\n In 1942, Dr. Maguire gave birth to her daughter, Barbara Charlotte Champion (1942-2014), with her first husband, Jess Paul Champion (1914-1987). After divorcing Champion in 1947, she married attorney Raymer Maguire (1890-1960) in 1948. They later had a son, Thomas Clair Maguire II (1952-1996) in the early 1950s. Dr. Maguire continued to grow her practice throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, Dr. Maguire left her practice and accepted a position as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Crippled Children's Commission of the newly created Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She later went on to work for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. and remained there until her retirement in 1994.\n In 1999, Dr. Maguire donated $1 million to create the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Endowed Scholarship Fund. Maguire's dedication to the FSU College of Medicine earned her the nickname \"Mother of the FSU Medical School.\" Dr. Maguire was also heavily involved in the development of the College of Medicine, advocating for the institution and mentoring students in the program. In 2002, Dr. Maguire was bestowed upon an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by President Sandy D'Alemberte, \"making [her] Dr. Dr. Maguire,\" and had the distinct honor of having the FSU Medical Library named after in 2005.\n Dr. Maguire lived at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, where she donated $1 million to create the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning. In her leisure time, she pursued genealogy and painting. Dr. Maguire passed away in 2014.","The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Collection contains three VHS tapes that require the use of a VCR.","This collection documents the involvement of Charlotte Edwards Maguire (1918-2014) in the development of the Florida State University College of Medicine through meeting minutes, correspondence, program pamphlets and flyers, photographs and reports. At the age of 23 the Selective Service Act of September 1940 required him to enlist. By April 1941 he was training at Camp Claiborne in Louisiana where he became a rifleman and staff sergeant for the Infantry's 113th Regiment in the 34th Infantry Division nicknamed \"Red Bull Division.\" From February 1942 to October 1944 he served in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre in the Tunisian Campaign, Rome-Arno campaign, and North Apennines Campaign. His service ended abruptly on October 19, 1944 in Cecina, Italy when he received a gunshot wound which broke his femur, for which he was awarded his third Purple Heart Medal. Aside from Purple Heart, Gentges was also awarded a Bronze Star Medal, 5 overseas service bars, one three-year service stripe, a combat infantry badge, an American defense service ribbon, and maintained good conduct throughout his service. The details of his service can be found in his memoir compiled by his daughter in 2001 and contained in the collection.\n \nIt is evident in Gentges memoirs, diary entries, and letters that he is a devout Catholic. When serving in Italy, he visited Rome twice where the Pope blessed his rosary. Later, Gentges became a member of the Society for the Propagation of Faith and wrote a letter to the society saying that he detested his destructive job, especially as a man of god, but understood his duty to his country. Gentges wrote \"at present I'm in the hospital with a battle injury. Soon I must return with rifle in hand to the job I detest. A man has a duty toward his country. He was raised in Daytona and Orlando, and he graduated from Orlando High School in 1930. In 1934 he graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in law. He subsequently attented the New York University (NYU) School of International Finance. He was briefly employed by the NRA (National Recovery Act of the New Deal) and the Resettlement Administration. He moved to Miami in 1936 to practice law. As one of only a few hundred Jews in the Miami area during the late 1930s, he experienced and witnessed a surge of anti-semitism. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and had risen to the rank of Master Sergeant at the time of his discharge in 1945. He was stationed at Camp Blanding, Florida for the duration. \nDuring the 1950s Mr. Roth was a member of the Miami Beach City Commission, as well as serving for a period of time as Vice-Mayor. He served as president of the Miami and Miami Beach Districts of the Zionist Organization and its Emergency Council. He was the Florida State Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States; President of the Sholem Lodge of B'nai B'rith, and General Counsel for the Florida Committee for Public Education and Religious Liberty. He also served as president of the United Cerebral Palsy of Dade County. However, while he was a member of many organizations, the bulk of this collection reflects his work with the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'Rith. ","\nThe Anti-Defamation League (ADL) was founded in September 1913 by Sigmund Livingston. Its sole purpose was \"to stop, by appeals to reason and conscience and, if necessary, by appeals to law, the defamation of the Jewish people.\" The ADL is an international nonprofit Jewish organization that has stated that its primary purpose is \"to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike, and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens.\" Burnett Roth, who became an active member of the ADL, was a lawyer and activist who resided in South Florida. While practicing law, Roth became an active member in equal rights amongst not just the Jewish community, but African Americans and all races as well. The mentality was all races regardless of background should not be segregated nor discriminated against. He passed away on July 8, 2008 at the age of 96.","Please note that this collection contains materials that may reflect outdated, biased, offensive, and possibly violent views and opinions. In addition, some of the materials may relate to violent or graphic events and are preserved for their historical significance.","This collection contains correspondence, memos, court dockets, news clippings, and meeting notes related to the Anti-defamation League (ADL). Mr. Roth was member of the National Board of Trustees of the B'Nai B'Rith Foundation of the United States; Vice-Chairman of the National Civil Rights Committee; Chairman of the Florida Regional Board of the ADL.
