Valente was born on August 3, 1921 in New York, New York, originally staying in an apartment in Brooklyn. His parents Ciro and Mary were Italian immigrants from the early 1900s, his father being a music professor and maestro while his mother worked as a finisher in a factory and was a member of the International Ladies' Garments Workers' Union. He had five siblings, however the first sibling died as an infant. His sisters Rosalie, otherwise known as Sally, and Carmela, also known as Lilly, both worked on Wall Street. His younger sister, Gina, was a musical prodigy, who started a prestigious musical career at the age of eight. Ralph was also a musician, having experience in playing the accordion and being the leader of his own musical trio. The family later moved to an apartment in Carnegie Hall.
On December 12, 1943, Valente enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of twenty-two. He started introductory training at Camp Upton, New York with his unit as a Private. During his training, he attained 185 points out of 200, earning the qualification of expert rifleman. On January 5, 1944, Valente and his unit transferred from Camp Upton to Camp Blanding, Florida two days later for advanced training. He was assigned to heavy artillery, which he and his unit were to maintain and operate both heavy machine guns and mortar guns. During this part of his training, he also studied for officer's training school, with the hopes of becoming an officer in his unit. However, he was not able to attain a rank past Private. During bivouac, he started having stomach problems, becoming so severe to the point where he was admitted to the hospital in Camp Blanding on April 26. However, the hospital staff could not find the source of the stomach issues, and he was released and transferred to a different unit on May 13. On May 27, Valente returned from bivouac and started studying to be a gunner or assistant gunner until he received orders to go on leave.
During his training, Valente took every opportunity presented to him to write back home to his parents and sisters. In some cases, whenever his wife Millie visited the camp, she would often write to the Valente family instead.
He returned home on leave until June 26, when he was sent to Fort George G. Meade to prepare for deployment in Europe. He arrived in England, where his unit was camped near London, and were later deployed to France. There, he fought in France as a member of Company A of the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, where he was wounded during fighting when his division, as a part of General Patton's Third Army, was taking part in pushing the Germans out of Northern France. He was awarded the Purple Heart on October 13th and was sent back to the front after recovering from his wounds. On November 9th, he was severly wounded in action during military operations along the Seille River in France. He passed away from his wounds on November 24th, 1944. He is buried along side his wife, Amelia, in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, NY.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to Ralph J. Criste also served as a Crime Watch captain in the Mount Vernon, FL area for many years. In 2003, Criste was entered into the World War II Registry of Remembrances. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy."," A GROPAC was a U.S. Naval organization designed to install and operate harbor and waterfront facilities and to provide certain harbor defenses for an advanced base. It normally provides for: the unloading of ships; installation and maintenance of navigational aids, piers, moorings, net defenses and underwater sound detection; the repair of small craft and harbor equipment; the operation of a harbor defense patrol; and the provision of a boat pool for use within the harbor. It provides, also, for its own administrative, communications, medical, and housing needs. GROPACS vary materially from each other in size and composition since each is individually designed to meet the needs of a particular island or area. He passed away February 16th, 2004 at the age of 86.","Note written by Michael Kasper

Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives in July 2022.

Custodial History
Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections & Archives in July 2022.

[Title of Item], [Date of Item], [Box and Folder number], William I. Researchers must contact McKay Archives in advance for access to unprocessed born digital materials in this collection. Collection restrictions, copyright limitations, or technical complications may hinder the archive's ability to provide access to unprocessed born digital materials.","Ludd Myrl Spivey (December 5, 1886 - December 27, 1962) was president of Florida Southern College from 1925-1957. He was born in Eclectic, Alabama, and educated at the University of Chicago. He was a friend and deciple of noted American educator John Dewey. Prior to becoming president of FSC, he was the academic dean of Birmingham Southern. ","When Dr. Spivey became president at what was then known as Southern College, the campus had one brick building and several small, temporary structures. Enrollment was only a few hundred students. Almost immediately, he faced financial challenges, as first the Florida Land Boom bubble burst which was followed by the collapse of the global economy. However, Spivey's fundraising abilities were unmatched, and the college was able to survive and grow despite these serious financial headwinds. In the late 1930s, Dr. Spivey was looking for a way to "put Florida Southern College on the map." He decided that he needed to build something unique to set it apart from other colleges of similar size and mission. Out of the blue, he contacted renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and together the two spent the next twenty years designing and building the "College of Tomorrow." ","In 1931, Ludd Spivey established an art school in Sarasota as a remote branch of Florida Southern College and he served as its chief director. This college eventually became known as the Ringling College of Art and Design. ","Dr. Spivey's legacy goes beyond his impact on the physical plant of Florida Southern College. He was also an innovative and progressive educator who believed in the development of the whole person--mind, body, and soul. He was a leader in the progress towards racial equality, forming a close relationship with Mary Mcleod Bethune and Bethune-Cookman College. He developed a strong science program at FSC, with a focus on the citrus industry as well as cancer research. ","When he retired in 1957, the college was a very different place than when he started. Enrollment approached 2000 students, and many new programs had been added. He remained connected to the college, and was awarded the distinction of President Emeritus. He passed away in Palm Beach in 1962 after a brief illness. ","These materials were originally housed within the Office of the President Records. Intially, the files of Doctors Spivey, Thrift, and Davis were housed separately, however, there was enough overlap that it was determined to create an Office of the President record group to keep the official materials in one collection, while separating out the more personal stuff in the process. Of course, a college president's life is often blurred between their offical and private selves. For a complete picture of Dr. Spivey, please also refer to the Office of the President Record Group (CA100) in the College Archives Repository.","These materials reflect Dr. Ludd M. Spivey's personal life during and shortly after his tenure as president. The collection includes correspondence, photos, sermons, writings, travellogs, and other ephemera.","This collection is owned by Florida Southern College.
