Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. Collecion rehoused and finding aid revised by Chynna Thomas in 2023.","A large book collection accompanies this collection and may be accessed by performing a series search \"Michael A. The contents of each series or subseries have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically, unless otherwise noted.","Born in 1918, Charlotte Edwards Maguire was a pediatrician and early supporter of the FSU College of Medicine. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Memphis Teachers College in 1940 and her medical degree from The University of Arkansas in 1944, she opened her first pediatrics practice in Orlando, FL. She served as the director of the Orlando Child Health Clinic, chief of staff for the Central Florida Division of Children's Home Society Florida, and was the first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society in 1952. Dr. Maguire was a pioneer for women in the medical industry, but was almost prevented from pursuing the field due to prejudice from the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Often singled out for being the only woman in her field (and was often referred to as \"Girl Doctor\" in newspapers), Dr. Maguire carved out a niche for herself and began to influence the medical industry in Florida.\n In 1942, Dr. Maguire gave birth to her daughter, Barbara Charlotte Champion (1942-2014), with her first husband, Jess Paul Champion (1914-1987). After divorcing Champion in 1947, she married attorney Raymer Maguire (1890-1960) in 1948. They later had a son, Thomas Clair Maguire II (1952-1996) in the early 1950s. Dr. Maguire continued to grow her practice throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, Dr. Maguire left her practice and accepted a position as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Crippled Children's Commission of the newly created Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She later went on to work for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. and remained there until her retirement in 1994.\n In 1999, Dr. Maguire donated $1 million to create the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Endowed Scholarship Fund. Maguire's dedication to the FSU College of Medicine earned her the nickname \"Mother of the FSU Medical School.\" Dr. Maguire was also heavily involved in the development of the College of Medicine, advocating for the institution and mentoring students in the program. In 2002, Dr. Maguire was bestowed upon an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by President Sandy D'Alemberte, \"making [her] Dr. Dr. Maguire,\" and had the distinct honor of having the FSU Medical Library named after in 2005.\n Dr. Maguire lived at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, where she donated $1 million to create the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning. In her leisure time, she pursued genealogy and painting. Dr. Maguire passed away in 2014.","The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Collection contains three VHS tapes that require the use of a VCR.","This collection documents the involvement of Charlotte Edwards Maguire (1918-2014) in the development of the Florida State University College of Medicine through meeting minutes, correspondence, program pamphlets and flyers, photographs and reports. Ellingwood began his military service in 1936 and underwent recruit training in Connecticut and Rhode Island throughout the year. Throughout 1937, Ellingwood served as a Seaman Second Class on the USS :Cummings and after 1938, Ellingwood performed disbursing work on the USS Tucker as a storekeeper. In 1940, Ellingwood was transferred as a storekeeper to the USS Shaw shortly before it was bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. According to Ellingwood: \"I heard someone shout, \"We're being attacked.\" We all ran to our battle stations. Mine was on the bridge.\" On top of the Shaw, he viewed the Japanese attacking Battleship Row, where he stated that \"one of the most sickening things I watched was the USS Oklahoma capsize. To see this big ship roll over and see it go belly up, knowing hundreds of soldiers could be trapped inside, made me feel ill… made me feel useless.\" While Ellingwood ended up in the water after two bombs had struck the Shaw, he spent hours after the attack helping wounded soldiers swim to shore and removing the bodies of his former shipmates.\n \nAfter surviving the attack on the USS Shaw , Ellingwood served as the Acting Pay Clerk on the USS Dixie and the USS Fomalhaut until he attended flight training from 1942 to 1945. Yet in September 1946, Ellingwood joined the Supply Corps -- a career path which remained with him for the rest of his time in the Navy. By the time of his compulsory retirement in 1966, Ellingwood had attained the rank of Commander and his final duty in the service was as a Contracting Officer with the Office of the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, USN. He retired on August 31, 1966. After leaving the service, Ellingwood worked at the Newport News Shipyard for an additional 17 years before officially retiring in 1984. Ellingwood passed away at the age of 90 at his home on June 19, 2008, and his ashes were buried at sea off the coast of Virginia at the request of his second wife, Gavin Ellingwood.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection pertains to Commander Leonard D. Ellingwood who had served as an Acting Pay Clerk with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ellingwood was stationed on the USS Shaw during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Shortly after surviving the attack, Ellingwood was transferred to the Naval Supply Corps, where he had remained until his honorable discharge in 1966. This collection includes Ellingwood's official Naval personnel documents from 1936 to 1966, newspapers in which Ellingwood recounts his experiences during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and various photographs of Ellingwood in Naval uniforms. Walter Clark's career as sheriff is most noted by the lynching of African American field worker Reuben Stacey in 1935. Reuben Stacey was accused of attacking a white woman and was lynched while being transferred from the Broward County Courthouse to the Dade County jail. Clark other police officers subjected forty \"negro suspects\" of a murder to intense and random questioning. On May 20th, four of the suspects \"broke\" and confessed to the murder. Chambers, Davis, Williamson and Woodward were sentenced by an all-white jury to death by electric chair. S.D. In 1950, Senator Estes Kefauver and his committee began an investigation of Sheriff Clark and his connection to illegal gambling in Broward County.
