Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. This event marked the beginning of the United States Maritime Service Training Station (USMSTS) in St. Petersburg, Florida. From late 1939 until 1941, the Maritime Service ships resided at the Coast Guard base while construction of the training station took place. Dedicated in July 1941, the USMSTS became an active training center during the war years. Until decommissioned in early 1950, this site served as one of the largest training facilities for the Merchant Marine along the southern coast of the United States. Thousands of Maritime Service graduates who had trained on ships such as the Joseph Conrad, Tusitala, Vigil, American Seaman, and American Sailor later carried supplies to armed forces during the Second World War and played other essential roles in supporting convoys and protecting shipments.","Mariners had served with honor since the earliest days of the United States, with privateers and merchant marines assisting the Continental Navy during the American Revolution. During times of war and peace, these sailors transported cargo, guarded shipments, and assisted members of\nthe Armed Forces with logistical operations. The United States Congress authorized the creation of a United States Maritime Service through the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. Two years later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the U.S. Maritime Service (USMS) in an effort to\nprepare for possible wartime hostilities.","Approximately 25,000 young adults trained at the Bayboro Harbor facility between early 1940 and 31 March 1950. Many young men between the ages of 17½ and 35 arrived during America's involvement in the Second World War. Along with waves of over 120,000 U.S. Army Air Corps recruits and other service personnel, the USMS trainees stayed at hotels such as the Soreno and Vinoy, as well as in the barracks that later became part of USF St. Petersburg ('B' building) until demolished in March 1992. Cadets faced a rigorous five-week preliminary training session to test their aptitude in seamanship and boat operations. USMS trainees took classes at the station\n(including swimming and endurance tests in the pool), in outdoor facilities near the present-day site of the Bayfront Center, and on the ships docked along the harbor. After the initial training session, the merchant mariners continued their studies in areas such as practical ship training (on the deck, in the engine room, as a steward, etc.) and advanced navigational techniques. A Cooks and Bakers School also began in December 1942.","Donald Saxer, a cadet who trained at the facility in 1943 and later joined the staff, collected many of the items in the Saxer/USMSTS, Bayboro Harbor, Collection. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Saxer became an important leader at Bayboro Harbor. After the station closed in 1950, Saxer remained as part of the staff that managed the facilities until the City of St. Petersburg took control of the site in the mid-1950s.","Speical Collections and University Archives has related collections including the Goddard collection, Hoffman/Luckett collection, and the DiMattia collection. ","Internet resources include web pages created by former members of the United States Merchant Marine/Martime Service: \nhttp://www.usmm.org","Materials include the newspaper clippings, photographs, pamphlets, and ephemera collected by Donald Saxer. His parents were Russian\nImmigrants who spoke Russian, Yiddish, and English in his household. He had three brothers\nWilliam, Abraham, and Joseph, as well as one sister, Marion. His family subsisted below the poverty\nline for most his childhood. Jack was working at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia manufacturing ammunition when he was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 10, 1942. He entered the Army Specialized Training Progam at the University of St. Louis from July 20, 1943 until March 16, 1944. He held various assignments within the Continental United States until he was shipped overseas to the European Theater of Operations with the 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, as a Squad Leader (E-5, Sergeant) of a light weapons squad. He landed in France with the Division on September 15, 1944 and participated in campaigns in France and Germany, eventually earning five \"battle stars,\" the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Bronze Star Medal.\n \nIt was during his time in France that Rifkin acquired most of his war souvenirs. He was involved in\noperations that freed French Freedom Fighters from German POW camps. Most of the German\ndecorations and badges were taken from German Prisoners of War. The Walther PP pistol in this collection was given to Rifkin by the Free French in appreciation for their liberation. Rifkin served as part of the American forces that occupied Germany immediately after the war ended in Europe. Upon departure from France, all of the soldiers were told they were forbidden to bring guns to the United States as war souvenirs. A warning was issued that stated anyone caught with weapons in their seabag would be detained from departing on the ship returning to the United States. Hundreds of weapons were voluntarily removed from seabags and placed on the dock. Jack refused to go along, and took his chances due to the high regard he had for the Walther pistol. The warning was a bluff. No searches were conducted, and thus he successfully brought the weapon home.\n \nAfter discharge, Jack met and married Marilyn Weiner in Philadelphia on October 12, 1947. After\nexperiencing some health related issues, Jack and Marilyn moved to Miami, Florida in the early\n1950's. They had a daughter (Roberta) on December 25, 1956 and a son (Donald) on May 25,\n1960. Marilyn remained a homemaker her entire life. Jack was a salesman of building supplies to Cynaman Bros. Construction. He and Marilyn retired to Pompano Beach from Miami, where he enjoyed fishing from the Pompano Beach fishing pier three days a week. Marilyn passed away at the age of 66 in 1993 from a stroke in Pompano Beach. FL. They were married 47 years. Jack remained active\nin his retirement until he was debilitated by a stroke. His daughter Roberta had him transferred\nto a hospice facility near her home in Georgia where he passed away six months later from his illness on June 29, 2002 in Riverside, GA.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to Sergeant Jack Rifkin who served with the 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.
