Please contact lib-special@unf.edu to schedule an appointment.","The collection provides historical documentation of the evolution of the Duval Medical Center (DMC) of Jacksonville, Florida, during its pivotal growth years of 1963-1973. The institution, called the \"nation's oldest publicly supported hospital,\" began on June 4, 1870, as the Duval County Hospital and Asylum, with the express purpose of helping the indigent sick of Jacksonville. ","The Hospital grew steadily through the early twentieth century, as did the total population of Duval County. The latter almost doubled from a total of 280,000 people in 1949 to 500,000 in 1964 and the need for larger medical facilities became critical. It is estimated that approximately twenty-five patients were turned away on a daily basis because of a shortage of beds.","To address this need, the Duval County Hospital Authority was created in 1963 by the Florida Legislature to make possible the construction of a new hospital facility. In 1964, Duval County medical and governmental leaders lobbied for the passage of a $20 million dollar bond issue. Its successful passage enabled the DMC to broaden its patient base and become a hub in the medical teaching community, and to eventually build a new hospital which would offer medical service that would improve care for the entire community.","By 1969, the DMC had grown into a 256 bed community general hospital, serving more than 100,000 patients and operated by the Duval County Hospital Authority. 1971 saw both a new medical complex and a new name for the institution. Upon the opening of a new eight story, $27 million dollar health complex in March, the facility officially changed its name to University Hospital.","Documents pertaining to issues and activities, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, presentations and speeches by Dr. G. Dekle Taylor, minutes of various Committee meetings, reports, brochures and fact sheets on the 1971 University Hospital complex, and two photographs of Dr. Taylor being inducted in 1969 as President of the Center's Medical Staff.","This collection was donated by Dr. Taylor, a Jacksonville physician and a principal participant in the Center's transformation during this time period. He served on the Duval County Hospital Authority from 1964-66, as Chairman of the 1968 Ad Hoc Committee for the Improvement of the DMC, and as President of the DMC Medical Staff in 1969-70. The majority of the correspondence and documents pertain to his role and activities as a leading proponent of change for the DMC.","Overall, the materials give insight into the medical issues regarding the delivery of health care in Jacksonville during this time period, particularly the chronic funding problems common to large community charity hospitals. Committee reports also detail the long range expansion programs of the Duval County Hospital Authority, and the efforts of determined medical leaders to re-evaluate and redefine the community role of the DMC.","Materials in the collection may be subject to copyright and are to be used for private study, scholarship, or research in accordance with the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code). Upon the opening of a new eight story, $27 million dollar health complex in March, the facility officially changed its name to University Hospital."],"prefercite_html_tesm":["\u003cp\u003eDuval Medical Center, University Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida Collection. Berry Citrus Building. \nEmil Karst served as the Foundation's first President, Stephen Chase served as the first Vice\nPresident, and Dr. O.C. Bryan served as the first Technical Director. In May 1949, the \nFoundation moved locations to East Main Street in Lakeland. In 1967, the Soil Science \nFoundation split into two organizations: Soil Science Foundation, Inc. and Soil Science \nService, Inc., the latter of which focused more on research. After the death of Dr. O.C. Bryan in \nJanuary 1970, Dr. James R. Iley took over the Technical Director position at Soil Science \nService, Inc. On May 27, 1970, the Foundation changed its name to Agricultural Research \nCenter, Inc., and the Soil Science Service became Applied Agricultural Research, Inc., as the \nFoundation wanted to reflect the broadening of the organization's mission. By 1993, both \norganizations had dissolved. \nThroughout its existence, the Foundation operated research groves including the Short Grove \n(established in 1939 in Clermont, Florida) and the Duette Grove (established in 1959 in \nManatee County, Florida). The contents of each series or subseries have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically, unless otherwise noted.","Born in 1918, Charlotte Edwards Maguire was a pediatrician and early supporter of the FSU College of Medicine. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Memphis Teachers College in 1940 and her medical degree from The University of Arkansas in 1944, she opened her first pediatrics practice in Orlando, FL. She served as the director of the Orlando Child Health Clinic, chief of staff for the Central Florida Division of Children's Home Society Florida, and was the first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society in 1952. Dr. Maguire was a pioneer for women in the medical industry, but was almost prevented from pursuing the field due to prejudice from the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Often singled out for being the only woman in her field (and was often referred to as \"Girl Doctor\" in newspapers), Dr. Maguire carved out a niche for herself and began to influence the medical industry in Florida.\n In 1942, Dr. Maguire gave birth to her daughter, Barbara Charlotte Champion (1942-2014), with her first husband, Jess Paul Champion (1914-1987). After divorcing Champion in 1947, she married attorney Raymer Maguire (1890-1960) in 1948. They later had a son, Thomas Clair Maguire II (1952-1996) in the early 1950s. Dr. Maguire continued to grow her practice throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, Dr. Maguire left her practice and accepted a position as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Crippled Children's Commission of the newly created Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She later went on to work for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. and remained there until her retirement in 1994.\n In 1999, Dr. Maguire donated $1 million to create the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Endowed Scholarship Fund. Maguire's dedication to the FSU College of Medicine earned her the nickname \"Mother of the FSU Medical School.\" Dr. Maguire was also heavily involved in the development of the College of Medicine, advocating for the institution and mentoring students in the program. In 2002, Dr. Maguire was bestowed upon an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by President Sandy D'Alemberte, \"making [her] Dr. Dr. Maguire,\" and had the distinct honor of having the FSU Medical Library named after in 2005.\n Dr. Maguire lived at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, where she donated $1 million to create the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning. In her leisure time, she pursued genealogy and painting. Dr. Maguire passed away in 2014.","The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Collection contains three VHS tapes that require the use of a VCR.","This collection documents the involvement of Charlotte Edwards Maguire (1918-2014) in the development of the Florida State University College of Medicine through meeting minutes, correspondence, program pamphlets and flyers, photographs and reports.
