He began his career in Florida at the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station in 1907 as a plant pathologist. He took a leave of absence during World War I to join the U.S. Army, eventually earning the rank of Colonel. In 1920, Floyd shifted to the private sector and joined\nWilson and Toomer Fertilizer Company as a horticulturalist and later becoming Vice President. He primarily worked in Davenport as part of Wilson and Toomer's subsidiary the Holly Hill Grove and Fruit Company. Floyd wrote several publications, including numerous bulletins for Wilson and Toomer; he would work for the company until his death in 1945. Colonel Bayard F. Floyd was posthumously inducted into the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame in 1962 as part of its inaugural class of inductees.","Col. Bayard F. By the turn of the century, numerous companies were in operation, with a heavy concentration in central Florida and especially what are the modern Polk, Hillsborough, and Peace River areas. IMC-Agrico was formed by the merger of International Minerals and Chemical Company and the American Agricultural Chemical Company. Due to poor transportation and the isolation of the phosphate mines from urban centers, the phosphate industry built and ran company towns for employees. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons.
