The majority come from the The Thomas and Georgine Mickler Collection. The Mickler collection was partly purchased and donated to the University. Other photos within the collection originated in the Special Collections Vertical File. The Vertical File contains a variety of collected materials on University of Central Florida, local history, typography and book arts, and the West Indies, subjects relating to the collections held by Special Collections. Also included in the collection are images from the Children's Home Society of Florida collection.","Many of the images were previously included in the Thomas and Georgine Mickler Collection and the Florida Ephemera collection. Both of these collections are housed in the University of Central Florida Archives.","Collection processed by Alexandra Olson; finding aid created by Alexandra Olson.","The photographs and postcards were sleeved and placed in acid-free folders and boxes.","More photographs may be found in the papers of individual University Presidents, as well as the Univeristy Photograph Collection. All these materials may be accessed in the Special Collections Reading Room.","Generally, images of individuals arranged alphabetically begin each subseries followed by groups of people and ending with unidentified images. The collection includes postcard images of scenes and places in Florida. Many of the photographs were originally part of the Thomas and Georgine Mickler Collection. The photos are arranged by series according to the type of image. The prints are mostly black and white, but a few are in color. The photographs and postcards have been arranged in nine series by subject","\nSeries I: People, 1913-1987, Undated contains photographic prints of individuals and groups that have been arranged in subseries from identifiable people and families to albums and ending with individuals and groups. Images, in this series, like those of the Pope family are significant to Florida because Dick Pope was the creator of Cypress Gardens, Florida's first theme park. Images of the Roper family are important because of this family's link to the Florida Citrus Industry and the Winter Garden area.","\nSeries II: Places, 1903-1988, Undated holds photographs of places and localities from around Florida arranged alphabetically. Disney forms the first subseries, followed by the John F. Kennedy Space Center, general localities and ending with a colleciton of photographs of Orange Blossom Trail in South Orlando.","\nSeries III: Environment, 1899-1999, Undated contains images of native wildlife, plants of Florida, ending with photographs of hurricanes.","\nSeries IV: Miscellaneous Images, 2002, Undated contains photographs and images that do not fit within any other series, but are still important to the memory of Florida.","\nSeries V: Photo Postcards, 1898-1988, Undated holds postcards that have either a genuine photograph or a printed image on one side. The printed postcards are divided into subseries by subject. The nine subjects include: Churches, hotels, localities, native plants, native wildlife, people, tourism, transportation and miscellaneous.","\nSeries VI: Picture Books (Souvenir Albums), 1884-1969, Undated contains albums and postcard books with many different images of Florida. The series is arranged alphabetically by title of book, and spans from Railroads to Locales.","\nSeries VII: Caribbean Postcards, 1954, Undated contains postcards with different images of Carribbean life.","\nSeries VIII: Color Plates and Oversized Postcards, 1960, Undated holds all the oversized postcards from the collection as well as a collection of color plates. There is an LP Album in Box 5.","Anne Roselle (born Gyenge Anna; March 20, 1894 – July 31, 1989) was a Hungarian/American operatic dramatic soprano. Daughter of a Hungarian military officer, the dramatic soprano was married as a young girl and came to New York City, where she received the bulk of her vocal training. Baritone Antonio Scotti was credited with her discovery and her initial contract with the Metropolitan Opera. She sang her debut there in December of 1920 as Muestta in La Boheme. Unhappy with the light roles assigned to her, she left the company in 1922 to tour with Scotti in such roles as Tosca and Butterfly, as well as Nedda and Micaela. In 1925 her Viennese Butterfly debut excited international attention, and in 1926 her milestone engagement in Dresden as the first German-language Turandot (under Fritz Busch) made operatic history. She remained for six seasons in Dresden while intermittently appearing in Berlin, Vienna, London, and Paris. In 1928 Toscanini selected her to sing Turandot at La Scala, and in 1930 the French government conferred upon her the title of Madame for \"service in expanding French art.\" She went to San Francisco for Turandot in 1927 and to Covent Garden for the same role in 1928 and 1929. It was Philadephia and the year 1931 that brought her next milestone: Marie in the American premiere of Wozzeck under Leopold Stokowski. This highly successful production was immediately repeated at the Metropolitan. The next year she sang Elektra--which she had studied extensively with Richard Strauss himself--under Fritz Reiner in Philadelphia. Her musical associations with Alban Berg and Richard Strauss were longstanding and productive--the latter devoting great time and care to her in performance of Don Giovanni (Donna Anna) and his own Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome. Soon after the dealth of her husband and adviser David Rosner, she moved to the Frank Lloyd Wright campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, to teach voice and opera studies from 1955 until her retirement in 1967. His parents were Russian\nImmigrants who spoke Russian, Yiddish, and English in his household. He had three brothers\nWilliam, Abraham, and Joseph, as well as one sister, Marion. His family subsisted below the poverty\nline for most his childhood. Jack was working at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia manufacturing ammunition when he was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 10, 1942. He entered the Army Specialized Training Progam at the University of St. Louis from July 20, 1943 until March 16, 1944. He held various assignments within the Continental United States until he was shipped overseas to the European Theater of Operations with the 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, as a Squad Leader (E-5, Sergeant) of a light weapons squad. He landed in France with the Division on September 15, 1944 and participated in campaigns in France and Germany, eventually earning five \"battle stars,\" the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Bronze Star Medal.\n \nIt was during his time in France that Rifkin acquired most of his war souvenirs. He was involved in\noperations that freed French Freedom Fighters from German POW camps. Most of the German\ndecorations and badges were taken from German Prisoners of War. The Walther PP pistol in this collection was given to Rifkin by the Free French in appreciation for their liberation. Rifkin served as part of the American forces that occupied Germany immediately after the war ended in Europe. Upon departure from France, all of the soldiers were told they were forbidden to bring guns to the United States as war souvenirs. A warning was issued that stated anyone caught with weapons in their seabag would be detained from departing on the ship returning to the United States. Hundreds of weapons were voluntarily removed from seabags and placed on the dock. Jack refused to go along, and took his chances due to the high regard he had for the Walther pistol. The warning was a bluff. No searches were conducted, and thus he successfully brought the weapon home.\n \nAfter discharge, Jack met and married Marilyn Weiner in Philadelphia on October 12, 1947. After\nexperiencing some health related issues, Jack and Marilyn moved to Miami, Florida in the early\n1950's. They had a daughter (Roberta) on December 25, 1956 and a son (Donald) on May 25,\n1960. Marilyn remained a homemaker her entire life. Jack was a salesman of building supplies to Cynaman Bros. Construction. He and Marilyn retired to Pompano Beach from Miami, where he enjoyed fishing from the Pompano Beach fishing pier three days a week. Marilyn passed away at the age of 66 in 1993 from a stroke in Pompano Beach. FL. They were married 47 years. Jack remained active\nin his retirement until he was debilitated by a stroke. His daughter Roberta had him transferred\nto a hospice facility near her home in Georgia where he passed away six months later from his illness on June 29, 2002 in Riverside, GA.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection relates to Sergeant Jack Rifkin who served with the 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.
