The contents of each series or subseries have been arranged alphabetically, then chronologically, unless otherwise noted.","Born in 1918, Charlotte Edwards Maguire was a pediatrician and early supporter of the FSU College of Medicine. After receiving her bachelor's degree from Memphis Teachers College in 1940 and her medical degree from The University of Arkansas in 1944, she opened her first pediatrics practice in Orlando, FL. She served as the director of the Orlando Child Health Clinic, chief of staff for the Central Florida Division of Children's Home Society Florida, and was the first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society in 1952. Dr. Maguire was a pioneer for women in the medical industry, but was almost prevented from pursuing the field due to prejudice from the faculty at the University of Arkansas. Often singled out for being the only woman in her field (and was often referred to as \"Girl Doctor\" in newspapers), Dr. Maguire carved out a niche for herself and began to influence the medical industry in Florida.\n In 1942, Dr. Maguire gave birth to her daughter, Barbara Charlotte Champion (1942-2014), with her first husband, Jess Paul Champion (1914-1987). After divorcing Champion in 1947, she married attorney Raymer Maguire (1890-1960) in 1948. They later had a son, Thomas Clair Maguire II (1952-1996) in the early 1950s. Dr. Maguire continued to grow her practice throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, Dr. Maguire left her practice and accepted a position as the Assistant Secretary and Director of the Crippled Children's Commission of the newly created Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. She later went on to work for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. and remained there until her retirement in 1994.\n In 1999, Dr. Maguire donated $1 million to create the Charlotte Edwards Maguire Endowed Scholarship Fund. Maguire's dedication to the FSU College of Medicine earned her the nickname \"Mother of the FSU Medical School.\" Dr. Maguire was also heavily involved in the development of the College of Medicine, advocating for the institution and mentoring students in the program. In 2002, Dr. Maguire was bestowed upon an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by President Sandy D'Alemberte, \"making [her] Dr. Dr. Maguire,\" and had the distinct honor of having the FSU Medical Library named after in 2005.\n Dr. Maguire lived at Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee, FL, where she donated $1 million to create the Maguire Center for Lifelong Learning. In her leisure time, she pursued genealogy and painting. Dr. Maguire passed away in 2014.","The Charlotte Edwards Maguire Collection contains three VHS tapes that require the use of a VCR.","This collection documents the involvement of Charlotte Edwards Maguire (1918-2014) in the development of the Florida State University College of Medicine through meeting minutes, correspondence, program pamphlets and flyers, photographs and reports. Following this, she pursued advanced studies at the Tuskegee Institute, ultimately graduating with her masters from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Her degrees earned were all in education. Her professional career unfolded as a distinguished educator in the Duval County Public School system, where she imparted knowledge to elementary school students and dispensed her expertise in high school history at Matthew Gilbert High School over a span of 28 years.","Beyond the confines of the classroom, Mathis demonstrated a fervent commitment to civil rights, rendering substantial service to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Instrumental in spearheading voter registration initiatives and orchestrating local events, her advocacy extended to membership in the League of Women Voters. The local NAACP chapter, recognizing her indomitable dedication, established an annual community service award in her honor. In 1967, Mathis etched her name in history as one of the first women and African Americans elected to the Jacksonville City Council.","Her legislative endeavors during her tenure on the City Council were indicative of her unwavering commitment to societal equity. Initiatives included the proposal for a Citizens' Police Review Board, advocacy for freely accessible public toilets, championing equal job opportunities in public agencies, and the advocacy for reduced bus fares for senior citizens. In 1977, Mathis assumed the mantle of founder for the Minority Women's Coalition (MWC), an organization designed to nurture the comprehensive development of women through educational and professional avenues while encouraging civic engagement. The MWC's core mission is geared towards the enhancement of educational opportunities through an annual scholarship awards program and the provision of emergency assistance to vulnerable families facing existential threats.","Acknowledging Mathis's formidable contributions to education, a Jacksonville school was christened the Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School in her honor. The campaign to immortalize Mathis's legacy was led by her sister, Grace Brooks Solomon. Solomon was an advocate for racial equality and education much like her sister. Subsequently, Solomon assumed the presidency of the MWC. Sallye Brooks Mathis passed away in 1982 at the age of 70, leaving an enduring legacy in Jacksonville that secured her a distinguished position in the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame.","See also: ","Grace Brooks Solomon Papers, Thomas G.
