They have three sons, Jerome, Stephen, and Denis.","\nIn 1931 Dorothy and Walter were married, Dorothy completed her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, and she won the Avery Hopwood Contest. The $1,500 prize enabled the couple to live in France and Italy for a time. Dorothy wrote several acclaimed books of poetry as well as numerous articles for the magazine transition (always spelled in the lower case), publishing work by writers such as Hart Crane, Ernest Hemingway and Carl Jung. Eugene Jolas, the French editor of transition, wrote Dorothy in 1931, \"You are the only one in America whose writing seems to me to be going in the right direction.\"","\nWalter also published some poetry and wrote plays with playwright and screenwriter Paul Osborn when the two were in college at the University of Michigan. After living in Greenwich Village and Paris, he returned to Ann Arbor to accept a position at the University of Michigan editing Museum Publications as well as doing editorial work for the Press.","\nThe Donnelly's had a keen interest in the printing arts. Collected materials include examples from the best paper-makers, type designers, typographers, book binders, and printers as well as those artists involved in book illustrations. Notable in the collection are numerous publications of The Typophiles, a small group of graphic arts professionals based in New York, including luminaries like Bruce Rogers and Frederic W. Goudy. The Typophiles, who began meeting around 1932, are still meeting and publishing today.","Collection processed by Nadine Helm and Elizabeth Konzak; finding aid created by Nadine Helm and Elizabeth Konzak. "," \nSeries III, Additional Materials, 1909-2021, Undated, consists of seven boxes of card catalogs Walter and Dorothy Donnelly created to keep track of their inventory of the book collection. Various incoming and outgoing letters to the Donnellys, newspaper clippings, articles, poetry, and unpublished and published writings by the Donnellys can be found in the series. The personal books of Dorothy Donnelly, including her daily missal and reading and diary journals, are also featured.","Books donated with the Walter and Dorothy Donnelly Family Papers have been cataloged individually. He first spent time in Haiti as a child, when his father, Robert Debs Heinl, was Chief of the U.S. Naval Mission to Haiti (1959-1963). Michael lived there, in Port-au-Prince, until 1962, when he was sent back to the United States after nearly triggering a diplomatic incident. Michael, just twelve years old, had been arrested by a Tonton Macoute for publicly voicing criticism of the François Duvalier regime and had been taken to the presidential palace to be imprisoned. He was ultimately released, but only after catching the attention of the president's son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, who happened to be a close friend. Consequently, Michael's parents decided that he should return to the United States. As it was, Michael's father, an opponent of the Duvalier regime, was subsequently declared persona non grata the following year. The Heinl family nonetheless retained an interest in Haiti; Michael's parents, Robert Debs Heinl and Nancy Gordon Heinl, collected Haitian art and print materials through the rest of their lives, and in 1978 they published a popular history of the country, Written in Blood: The Story of the Haitian People, 1492-1971. Michael later built upon his parents' collection and revised and expanded a third edition of Written in Blood as well. Due to his knowledge of Haiti, Michael was invited in 2004 to testify at the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on the Western Hemisphere. Professionally, Michael worked in the aerospace industry and then as an international business consultant in Washington, D.C. He received a B.A. from Johns Hopkins in 1973 and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1979.","The FIU Green Library also holds books formerly owned by Michael Heinl. These materials are located in FIU Library online catalog by searching for: Michael Heinl Collection","The Heinl Collection is primarily concerned with Haiti. It includes photographs, print materials, and artwork from the late eighteenth century through to the late twentieth century. The photograph series contains images of Haiti from two periods: the U.S. occupation (1915-1934) and 1957-1971. Both sets have a strong focus on matters of military and diplomatic interest. The print materials include rare books, pamphlets, and letters, most of which are concerned with Haitian history.
