Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. He graduated in 1913 from the University of St. Petersburg and received his M.D. from the 2nd Medical School, Petrograd in 1917. In 1926 he earned a Sc.D. at Charles University in Prague. He served as a Captain in the Russian Army Medical Corps, 1917-1918 on the southwestern front and was\ndecorated with the Order of St. Vladimir. Prior to leaving Russia, Dr. Sokoloff served as Head of the Department of Experimental Medicine at the Institute of Science, Lesgaft University. He was a Fellow at the University of Brussels, Belgium and subsequently at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.\nDr. Sokoloff was a passionate believer in democracy. Prior to the end of the Russian Monarchy, he was active in the Social-Revolutionary Party. He spent six months in solitary confinement at the age of sixteen. Later, at the time of the (Alexander) Kerensky regime, he was elected by the army on the southwestern front as a member of the All-Russian Constituent Assembly, which\nwas then dispersed by Vladimir Lenin. He was arrested by the communists and spent more than four months at the Boutykri prison before being freed at the pleading of Nicholas Morosoff, President of Lesgaft University, who had begged Lenin to \"save the life of a promising young scientist.\" In 1929, he came to the United States at the invitation of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical\nResearch. He worked at the Crocker Institute at Columbia University from 1930-1931. From 1931-1935 worked for the Department of Pathology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1936 he returned to Columbia as a Research Fellow, where he remained until1942. He also worked at Harlem City Hospital. In 1947, he moved to Florida, where he became Director of the Cancer Research Institute at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. His move was prompted by his interest in citrus bioflavonoids (Vitamin-P). He was a pioneer in the work of bio-flavonoids and ascorbic acid in capillary fragility, radiation injury, and viral infections. He conducted a long-term study on the\neffects with aging cardiac patients and large doses of ascorbic acid on blood fat metabolism in addition to its effects on atherosclerosis and the aging process. Under a NASA grant, Dr. Sokoloff investigated high altitude malaise and related it to the concentrations of blood serotonin and serum ascorborne, as well as blood serotonin concentration both in normal and abnormal conditions such as hypercholesteremia, cancer, and various cardiac conditions.\nDr. Sokoloff's overwhelming passion was in the field of cancer research. He strongly believed that the cure for cancer would be achieved by non-toxic agents, and he continued his research until his death. He felt that there was clear evidence, as he wrote, \"that non-toxic agents do\nexist and that they may be in the field of fungi.\" While studying over 600 fungi from the Florida Everglades, he discovered two such antibiotics which were then submitted to the NCI for testing. It was found that they were completely non-toxic, even if used over a long period of\ntime, and they were shown to have strong anticancer activity. Dr. Sokoloff was a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American\nChemical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Society of Biological Editors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Royal Society of Arts and Letters. Over the course of his career, he published over eighty scientific research papers on a wide variety of subjects. In addition to Dr. Sokoloff's scientific work, he was also a noted author of over thirty books on a wide variety of subjects. He was married to Alice Hunt Sokoloff, and he had two sons and three\ngrandchildren. He died in 1979.","The materials in this collection concern the subject's professional career as a scientist from the 1920s through the 1970s. Almost immediately, he faced financial challenges, as first the Florida Land Boom bubble burst which was followed by the collapse of the global economy. However, Spivey's fundraising abilities were unmatched, and the college was able to survive and grow despite these serious financial headwinds. In the late 1930s, Dr. Spivey was looking for a way to \"put Florida Southern College on the map.\" He decided that he needed to build something unique to set it apart from other colleges of similar size and mission. Out of the blue, he contacted renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and together the two spent the next twenty years designing and building the \"College of Tomorrow.\" ","In 1931, Ludd Spivey established an art school in Sarasota as a remote branch of Florida Southern College and he served as its chief director. This college eventually became known as the Ringling College of Art and Design. ","Dr. Spivey's legacy goes beyond his impact on the physical plant of Florida Southern College. He was also an innovative and progressive educator who believed in the development of the whole person--mind, body, and soul. He was a leader in the progress towards racial equality, forming a close relationship with Mary Mcleod Bethune and Bethune-Cookman College. He developed a strong science program at FSC, with a focus on the citrus industry as well as cancer research. ","When he retired in 1957, the college was a very different place than when he started. Enrollment approached 2000 students, and many new programs had been added. He remained connected to the college, and was awarded the distinction of President Emeritus. He passed away in Palm Beach in 1962 after a brief illness. ","These materials were originally housed within the Office of the President Records. The founder, Columbus Drew, was born to British parents Solomon and Elizabeth Glyuas Drew on January 6, 1820 in Washington, D. C. His early education and training was in journalism and printing. In 1844 he married Marietta Hume Robinson of Richmond, Virginia. Their first son, Columbus, was born on December 3, 1847. Drew brought his family to Jacksonville in 1848 to establish a newspaper, \"The Florida Republican.\" The newspaper's plant was destroyed in 1854. One year later Drew opened the Columbus Drew Stationery Printing Company at the corner of Bay and Newnan Streets. The business moved a few years later to 60 West Bay Street and later to 49 West Bay Street.","During the Civil War, Drew served in the Confederate Treasury Department in Richmond, Virginia. For a few months in 1862, his eldest son Horace oversaw the business for his father until the family was forced to leave Jacksonville; they stayed in Lake City for the duration of the war. After the war, Drew returned to Jacksonville and with his son Horace, began the rebuilding of his business. In 1876 Columbus Drew was appointed Florida Comptroller by Governor George Drew (no relation) and sold the business to Horace. At this time, Drew brothers William B., John Braeme, and Julius partnered with Horace on a new printing plant located on West Bay Street. A fifth brother, Dr. Columbus Drew, did not join the business. The firm was named \"H. Drew\" or \"Horace Drew.\"","In 1886, brother William became a full partner and the name of the firm was changed to \"H. Drew and Brother,\" and operated at 49-51 West Bay Street. Two other major family events occurred during this time period: Horace Drew married Gertrude Fairbanks, the daughter of Major George Rainsford Fairbanks, and in 1891 Columbus Drew died. He was buried beside his wife in Jacksonville's Old City Cemetery. In 1893 the company was incorporated as the H. and W. B. Drew Company, Inc. Several years later, the Great Jacksonville Fire of 1901 destroyed the company's plant. A new two story building was soon erected at 45-47 West Bay Street. Horace Drew continued as company president until his death in 1926. ","Horace Rainsford Drew, Jr., a fourth generation Floridian and great-grandson of Columbus Drew, was born on January 1, 1918 in Jacksonville. His father was Dr. Horace Rainsford Drew, a physician and grandson of Columbus Drew. Drew Jr. attended local schools and graduated from the University of Florida in July 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and an LL.B. degree. After serving in the Army in World War II he practiced law for fifty years until his retirement in 1994. An active civic and community leader, he was a foundng member of the Southern Academy of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, a trustee of the Children's Home Society, and a trustee of the American Cancer Society. He was also the family's chief genealogist. In his publication \"Our Story\" [1998], he documented the saga of the Drew and Fairbanks families in Florida in the 1920s, 1930s, and the World War II era. Although active in law practice and a Lt. Col. of the Army Reserves, his first love was a family citrus grove in Cross Creek, Florida. He died on October 19, 2004.","The H. and W. B. Drew Company, Inc. remained primarily in family ownership for most of the twentieth century. As a result, it was known as the \"oldest family business\" in Jacksonville. It provided engraved stationery and office supplies to professionals across the country. In 1997 Wells Legal Supply, Inc. acquired the company to form the Wells and Drew Companies.","The collection consists of printed materials, artifacts, and memorabilia relating to the Drew Family and their businesses in the Jacksonville area.
