Fonelli was born to Francesco Paola and Maria-Antonia Fonelli, on September 28, 1906, in Central Italy, near Salerno. The \"J\" in Fonelli's name stands for \"Jacobus\" in Roman, and \"James\" in English. He was the oldest of three brothers and two sisters. From boyhood, Fonelli had a great desire for art, and while in the Italian grade schools made his best grades in designing various objects. When he was about six years of age he told his father that he wanted to be a great artist. A little while later his father took him to Rome where he had some preliminary training in sculpture from a Roman Sculptor.","In June 1913, Fonelli had successfully convinced his aunt and uncle to take him to America, where he entered school, attending both day and evening classes to learn English. At sixteen, Fonelli obtained his first full-time job in a mechanical shop, while continuing school. He graduated from Bryant High School in Queens, New York and then entered Long Island City Technical School in Long Island, New York, becoming a first-class tool maker. At nineteen, Fonelli was admitted to Cooper Union Institute in New York to study intensively in Motor Vehicle Engineering, and passed his final examination with honors.","At twenty-three, Fonelli received his first United States mechanical patent in auto toys. Later he obtained a Canadian patent. Fonelli studied preliminary Aeronautical Engineering subjects at Daniel Guggenheim School of Aeronautics, at New York University. In 1927, Fonelli opened a small private school of Aeronautics in New York, known as Aviation Engineering School. He received a Government Instructor’s License for Airplane Ground Work and a Civil Aviation Act (CAA) license as Ground Instructor of Aircraft.","In 1947, Fonelli attended the University of California in Oakland, California and in 1951 entered Columbia University in New York to study architecture, art, and sculpture. He furthered his artistic education in Washington, D.C. at the American University and the Corcoran School of Art. He later became Captain for a Navy project and received patents for inventing the heart-shaped bed.","Fonelli married Cleo H. Neher, his second wife in December 1959. Over the course of his lifetime, he was an architect, artist, sculptor, educator, and creative inventor. Later on in life, Fonelli suffered from a severe heart attack from which he never fully recovered. On November 29, 1972, he passed away in Florence, Italy, but was buried in the United States at Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, in Flushing, New York.","Collection processed by Suphi Burak Ogreten; finding aid prepared by Suphi Burak Ogreten. Waiting patiently, often days, despite insects, reptiles, and weather extremes, she captured her subject using a variety of media including watercolor, gouache, and pen and ink. In addition to painting and drawing, Postle wrote poetry; authored several books including Fine Feathers (1941), Glamour Birds of the Americas (1944), Drawing Animals (1953), and Drawing Birds (1963); and worked for the WPA Florida Art Project. Around 1937, Postle and Blackstone conceived \"Glamour Birds,\" a unique entertainment show combining recorded bird songs and music with Postle singing, painting birds, and teaching her audience about wildlife and conservation. \"Glamour Birds\" was performed for local civic and women's organizations and private groups. Clark Collection is digitized and available on the Broward County Library Digital Archives .","The Walter R. Clark Collection is arranged into four series: \n I. Correspondence II. Photographs III. Scrapbook IV. Framed collection of badges","Walter Reed Clark was born on December 11, 1904 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to farmers James Clark and Annie Miller Clark. He was the eldest of four sons. As a young adult, Clark was a butcher in a meat market before running for Broward County Sheriff in 1932. \nIn 1926, Clark married Avis Mae Mull and together they had a son named Curtis Clark. The couple later divorced and Clark married Odell Clark in 1937. ","In 1933 he became the Broward County Sheriff and served five terms until 1950. Walter Clark's career as sheriff is most noted by the lynching of African American field worker Reuben Stacey in 1935. Reuben Stacey was accused of attacking a white woman and was lynched while being transferred from the Broward County Courthouse to the Dade County jail. A grand jury investigated the lynching on July 23, 1935. The sheriff and his deputies in charge of the transfer were absolved of all wrongdoing in the crime.","Clark's time as Sheriff was also shaped by an incident in his first year in office that resulted in the Supreme Court Case Chambers v. Florida. It is clear from the evidence of both the State and four accused men that from May 14 to May 20, 1933 Sheriff Walter R. Clark other police officers subjected forty \"negro suspects\" of a murder to intense and random questioning. On May 20th, four of the suspects \"broke\" and confessed to the murder. Chambers, Davis, Williamson and Woodward were sentenced by an all-white jury to death by electric chair. S.D. McGill took up their defense case, and the legal battle to free them dragged on for years. On February 12, 1940, Justice Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court overturned the four men's convictions. In 1942, after 9 years of imprisonment, the four men were declared not guilty and released. Chambers vs. Florida was a landmark case in the US Supreme Court that set the precedent that police pressure, mental torture, and threats of violence violates the Due Process Clause.","Walter Clark was also accused of compliance in multiple illegal gambling institutions. In 1950, Senator Estes Kefauver and his committee began an investigation of Sheriff Clark and his connection to illegal gambling in Broward County. Kefauver exposed Clark's involvement in the Broward Novelty Company which alledgedly owned slot machines and ran an illegal lottery. However, at the end of the trial, Clark was found not guilty on all counts. ","Walter Clark died of leukemia on April 26, 1951.","This collection received file level processing.
