Postcard history is often divided into eight distinct \"eras\" beginning in the 1850s and continuing through the \"Golden Age of Postcards\" beginning around 1905 and lasting through 1915. In this golden age, millions of cards were printed and sold throughout the entire U.S. and collecting cards became a popular hobby. The Northeast Florida Regional Postcard Collection contains examples from many of the documented eras, including photographic cards popularized in the nineteen teens and twenties. ","\nAdvances in printing and photographic techniques along with faster shipping methods between the U.S. and Europe allowed for the mass production of brightly colored pictorial cards to be quickly manufactured and distributed to sellers. In addition to the printers in major U.S. cities, a network of publishers and photographers allowed many local businesses in small towns across the U.S. to commission postcards of local \"views\" that were cheaply printed in Germany. Many images of small-town life, including municipal architecture, private residences, and street scenes were preserved and are a useful tool for local historians and researchers. These views act as a \"visual record of a town\" and help develop a fuller understanding of the locations represented in the postcards. Additionally, postcards depicted natural disasters, fires, local amusements, and tourist attractions and were important to the souvenir trade of the time. Scrabook, Series II. Photographs.","Ivan Demorest Austin (1899-1989) was an early resident of Fort Lauderdale. He was born on April 27, 1899 in West Virginia and moved to Fort Lauderdale with his mother, Lena, in 1913. They joined Ivan's father, William (1870-1958), who was a jeweler. Ivan graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in May 1918. His wife, Frances Montgomery (1902-1993) was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Montgomery [1]. Frances and her mother followed Frances' father to Fort Lauderdale to let him work for the Fort Lauderdale Sentinel newspaper [2]. Frances graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1920 and from Rollins College in 1924 [3]. The couple had three daughters: Shirley, Joan, and Maureen [4]. Ivan and Frances Austin are buried at the Evergreen Cemetery. ","As a pioneer, Ivan Austin was involved in Fort Lauderdale's local life. He started in the real estate area and \"later operated a nursery in the 1600 block of Northeast Fourth Avenue\" [5]. He played on the city's first football team [6] and in the Drum and Bugle corps [7]. He was also a member of the Fort Lauderdale Volunteer Fireman's Association [8]. Ivan Austin became a hydraulic engineer [9] during the 1920s. He worked for the City of Fort Lauderdale as Superintendent of Water Works [10], as well as a civilian engineer for the army. Also, he was in High School with Watt Gordon, a famous local track athlete [11], and was probably one of his teammates. Around 1932, Ivan Austin moved to Miami Beach to work for the U.S. Engineer Corps [12]. He moved back to Fort Lauderdale in 1962.","In addition, Ivan Austin was a war veteran. After graduating from High School in May 1918, he joined the US Navy. He fought in World War I in the submarine chaser No. 276 [13]. In 1942, he served as an officer during World War II. In 1950, during the Korean War, he was also mobilized and won a Bronze Star medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation in recognition of his service. He ended his career in the US Army as Lieutenant Colonel.","Notes:\n[1] Miami News-Metropolis, July 28, 1924.\n[2] See note in Ivan and Frances Austin Scrapbook. \n[3] Sun-Sentinel, January 19, 1993.\n[4] 1940 U.S. Federal Census.\n[5] Sun-Sentinel, Friday, April 21, 1989.\n[6] Ivan and Frances Austin Collection, pictures 13 and 14.\n[7] Ivan and Frances Austin Collection, picture 2.\n[8] Ivan and Frances Austin Collection, picture 18.\n[9] 1930 U.S. Federal Census.\n[10] Miami News-Metropolis, July 25, 1924.\n[11] Kirk, Cooper, \"Fort Lauderdale High School Athletics and the 'Flying L' Symbol'\", Broward Legacy, Summer/Fall, 1989, p. 41.\n[12] Fort Lauderdale Daily News and Evening Sentinel, May 16, 1942.\n[13] Fort Lauderdale Daily News and Evening Sentinel, November 27, 1951.","The Ivan and Frances Austin Collection is processed at the item level. During her time here, the college faced many challenges, including recovery from the fire that had destroyed much of the Sutherland (now Palm Harbor) campus, the hurricane and fire at the temporary Clearwater Beach campus, and the subsequent move to Lakeland in 1922. ","While we do not know much about Ellen's life before and after her time at Southern, the materials in her scrapbook as well as information contained in the Interlaken yearbook, describe a hard-working and well regarded student. She was the Secretary of the Erolethean Literary Society in 1921 and 1923; member of the Epworth League Cabinet in 1921-1922 and 1923-1924; President of the Erolethean Society in 1922; Vice-President of the Class of 1923-1924; Treasurer of the Dramatic Club in 1924; and Editor of the Interlaken in 1924. She was the chairman of the Y.W.C.A. Recreation Committee in 1924.","Her yearbook characteriszation is as follows: \"We have hunted in vain for a word to express the combination of daintiness not too formal, or adroitness well directed, and of several other things. The idea is that we don't want to stop by just saying 'a sweet girl.' Here is a piece of friendly advice: Some folks not only fail to realize what can happen in the twinkle of an eye, but also what can happen by the twinkle of an eye.
