He completed business college and worked at a bank and on his father's newspaper. Mulford Foster first visited Florida in 1912 and was fascinated by Spanish Moss; he moved to Florida in 1923 and learned that Spanish Moss is a bromeliad. This discovery fired his interest in bromeliads although he also collected amaryllids, cacti, orchids, palms and other tropical plants. Mulford Foster made collecting trips to Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Jamaica, Mexico and other South American and Caribbean countries. In the course of his travels, he discovered new species many of which are named for him or family members, such as, Zephranthes Fosterii or Amaryllis Fosterii. As well as plant collecting, he worked as a landscape gardener and hybridized and sold plants. He was a founding member of the Bromeliad Society, and supported plant journals and alternative societies.
