George Fleming came to Florida, via Charleston, South Carolina, from Ireland ca. 1785 and became a large landowner after receiving a number of grants of land from the Spanish government. ","In 1791, he married Sophia Fatio, daughter of a St. Johns River planter, Francis Fatio. The Fleming family grew to one daughter, Mary, and two sons, Lewis and George, Jr. They resided in St. Augustine and at their St. Johns River plantation, Hibernia, on Fleming Island.","Francis Philip Fleming, son of Lewis and his second wife Margaret Seton, was born in 1841 in Panama Park, Duval County. In 1861, he joined the Second Florida infantry and served in the Civil War armies of Gens. Magruder, Johnston, Hood, and Lee. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1868, and became a partner in the Jacksonville law firm, Fleming and Daniel (later Fleming and Fleming)","In 1871, Francis Fleming married Floride Lydia Pearson, daughter of Bird M. Pearson, justice of the Florida Supreme Court. They had two sons, Francis P. Jr. and Charles Seton Fleming, and one daughter, Elizabeth.","With law and politics as his primary interests, Fleming became a noted civic leader in Jacksonville, with increasing activities in state politics as a member of the Democratic executive committee. In 1888, after an arduous gubernatorial campaign during the Yellow Fever epidemic, he defeated the Republican candidate V. J. Shipman. Fleming served as Governor of Florida from 1889 until 1893, the single term then allowed by law.","Notable issues and developments during his gubernatorial tenure included the creation of a State Board of Health in 1889, the repeal of the Florida Railroad Commission, attempts at higher education reorganization, adjustment of state revenues, the Farmers' Alliance movement, and the 1891 re-election controversy regarding U.S. Senator Wilkinson Call.","After retiring from politics in 1893, Fleming continued to practice law in Jacksonville and developed a strong interest in Floridiana and local history. He edited a two volume work by Rowland Rerick, Memoirs of Florida, helped to incorporate the Florida Historical Society in 1905, contributed several articles to the Society's Quarterly, and became the Society's President in 1907.","After a long illness, Francis Philip Fleming died on December 20, 1908.","After their father's death, his sons, Francis P. Jr. and Charles Seton, continued the family's law practice. ","Charles and Elizabeth Fleming also became active in the Florida Historical Society. Charles Fleming contributed articles and served as the Society's Director and Vice-President in 1924-25.","The collection consists of the personal correspondence of Fleming Family members and other correspondents circa 1879-1930. ","Most of the letters are incoming correspondence from relatives and friends to the Francis Philip Fleming family members. The core of the collection are condolence letters sent to Mrs. Francis P. Fleming, wife of the Governor, after his death on December 20, 1908.","There are only two letters in the collection from the Governor, sent to his vacationing wife in 1881. These letters are included in Mrs. Fleming's correspondence. Other Fleming family members represented in the collection are daughter Elizabeth, son Seton, and son-in-law Frank P. Hamilton.","One letter written by Frank Hamilton in 1908 is of special interest for it's glimpse of life in Jacksonville in the early twentieth century. As a newcomer to Florida and recently hired associate of the Fleming law firm, Hamilton relates his personal observations of the Fleming Family and eyewitness accounts of the bustling activity and renewed vitality of the city, only seven years after the Great Jacksonville Fire of 1901. Hamilton later married Elizabeth Fleming, daughter of the Governor.","All items are originals. Most letters are legible, with the letters from the late 1800's partially fading. Typed transcriptions of selected letters available.","Materials in the collection may be subject to copyright and are to be used for private study, scholarship, or research in accordance with the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code). Johnson was born on a farm in Benson, Minnesota, in 1906. He was\nconsidered one of the outstanding agricultural forecasters in the nation. Earning a Bachelor of\nArts degree in Science, History, and English in 1928 from Gustavious Adolphus College in St.\nPeter, Minnesota, Johnson minored in meteorology. Johnson's professors advised him to pursue a\ncareer in weather forecasting. He took that advice. He was a forecaster for forty-\ntwo years, thirty-five of which were in Florida. He was the meteorologist in charge of the\nFederal-State Agricultural Weather Service.\nFollowing a brief assignment as a U.S. Weather Bureau observer in Huron, South Dakota,\nJohnson was transferred to the bureau's headquarters in Washington, D.C. to work in the\nHurricane Forecasting Center for the Eastern United States from Maine to Florida, including the\nGulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean. While in Jacksonville, receiving advanced\nforecasting training, a forecasting and hurricane center was established there and Johnson was\nselected to assist in developing it.\nIn 1935 he transferred to Lakeland to take part in and help develop another newly-established\nweather program in the State of Florida – a joint Federal-State Agricultural Weather Service. His\nvalue to the hurricane forecasting section of the weather service and to the Federal-State\nAgricultural Weather Service resulted in him spending three years shuttling between forecasting\nhurricanes in the summer and freezes in the winter. He was called to hurricane forecasting in\n1938, but Johnson returned to Lakeland and the agricultural weather service as meteorologist in\ncharge. But his prowess as \"one of the top forecasters\" demanded his temporary duty in the\nHurricane Tracking Center, by then located in Miami. Like any other thriving and successful\nbusiness venture, the Federal-State Agricultural Weather Service expanded. It grew into a\nnetwork of eight field stations and 400 temperature survey stations, and Johnson was required to\nremain in Lakeland year-round to administer the service. His accuracy in forecasting freezes was\nestablished during those years, and he is considered one of the outstanding weather forecasters in\nthe nation. He not only earned the respect of those in the citrus industry, but of those of cousin\nagricultural industries, including vegetable and cattle.\nWhile at the agricultural weather service, Johnson was responsible for developing a widespread\ndaily broadcast of frost warning bulletins carried statewide by a radio network. \"Probably no\nindividual associated with the citrus industry was better known to growers and production\nmanagers – especially during the cold months,\" is the way Johnson was described by R.E.\nNorris. Not only was Johnson providing \"unusual accuracy\" in forecasting temperature\nminimums and duration of temperatures dangerous to citrus, he also assembled information and\ndata regarding grove protection during periods of frost and developed data regarding prospective\ngrove locations and the minimum temperatures the potential grove could expect.\nFrom 1943 through 1970, he was in charge of the Lakeland office and responsible for the\nagricultural forecasts during the winter months. Johnson developed a daily broadcast of frost\nwarning bulletins carried throughout the state by many radio stations. He established a teletype\nnetwork that was made available to growers. He administered field districts and hundreds of\ntemperature survey stations which helped depict minimum temperature characteristics of the\nstate. He also compiled data on the effects of various temperatures on the growth of citrus and\nvegetables. That data became the basis for Florida, Texas, and California programs and\nprotective measures to prevent agricultural damage.\nImpending frost of the nature that occasionally settles over the state during peak winter\nharvesting months are not as feared by citrus men today as they once were, thanks to the life's\nwork of \"Mr. Forecaster,\" Warren O. Johnson. From 1943 until his retirement, Johnson was\nassociated jointly with the Federal and State governments as the meteorologist in charge of the\nFederal-State Agricultural Weather Service. \"I think that he had a better feel for what was going\nto occur on those cold nights than the meteorologists of today, even though they must have had at\ntheir command very sophisticated technology as compared to the Johnson Days,\" wrote C.A.\nRoot, vice-president of Lykes Brothers citrus division.\nMany of the trails Johnson blazed into weather forecasting were particularly invaluable to the\ncitrus industry by affording advance warning to growers when the mercury was expected to drop\ninto hazardous temperature ranges. The teletype network and communications outlets to help\ngrowers keep tabs on developing weather conditions pioneered by Johnson are, for the most part,\nstill in use today.","This collection has been processed at a basic level in an effort to make this\ncollection available in the shortest amount of time.
