The items in this collection were assembled and held by George Dawson, Professor Emeritus over the course of his 34 years at Florida State University.  They represent approximately $20 million is grants and contracts awarded to the science education faculty members from 1964 to 2005. These materials, constituting several Middle and High School level curricular projects, have had a major impact on science education, in that they were prototypes, funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of the Interior. These projects, the Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS), the Individualized Science Curriculum Study (ISIS) and the Interactive Media Science (IMS) projects, were and are extremely successful as measured by numbers of copies in use and the influence they had on curriculum projects done by others.  \n The first two projects used a unique instructional model that drastically altered the scope and sequence of science instruction in our secondary schools. ISCS and ISIS initially developed printed teaching materials, constituting several curricular projects.  Groups around the world became interested in this project and, with the permission of FSU, developed their own teaching editions. For example, FSU worked with an Australian team to rewrite the program for their own use but all production was done at FSU.\n On the other hand, IMS pioneered the use of digital instructional media into the classroom.  IMS was the first major project using multimedia funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the resulting subprojects led the way in introducing a model of teaching using inquiry methodologies. \"Science Vision\" was the first major project funded by the NSF in educational technology.
