He also served in the same capacities at the Battle of Ardennes. While he was neither injured nor captured during his months of service, he did spend six weeks in a hospital in Paris due to an infection near the end of the war, after which he received day passes to Paris and Reims, France. While in service, Charles received several accolades and completed two years of higher education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.\n After being discharged from the Army, Charles returned to Sleepy Eye, where he resumed his position at (and later became president of) the First Security Bank and married June Enebo, with whom he had five children. After retiring in 1990, Charles prepared Income Tax Returns for customers, played musical instruments (accordion, saxophone, and clarinet) in bands, and enjoyed longtime memberships in the American Legion, the VFW, the Masonic Lodge, the Zurhah Shriners, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Minnesota Bankers Association. As the war began he wanted to pilot planes and in preparation studied at Kelly Field in San Antonio. Unfortunately it did not work out so he turned to navigation instead. After Lyon, he dropped bombs near the Ploesti oil fields in Romania (possibly Operation Tidal Wave; the time period and location matches up but Ivy does not specify any operation name).","On May 29, 1944, Ivy was over Vienna, Austria when his plane was shot down into enemy territory.
