Following basic training at Great Lakes, he entered formal aviation mechanics training in Norman, Oklahoma. Because he finished in the top five of his class, he was selected for the Lighter-Than-Air Project. He trained at Lakehurst, New Jersey, and he began working with a crew in EP squadron 14. Mixson talks about the crew's submarine patrols and search and rescue and escort missions in the Atlantic. He also talks about the equipment on the blimp and how the blimp functioned.
