Two years after graduating high school, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in June of 1939. After receiving training at the San Diego Naval Training Station, Burzynski traveled with the U.S. Navy to a variety of locations, including the South Pacific, South America, and South Africa. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he operated mostly in the Philippines stationed on the  USS Louisville . He was discharged in June of 1946 with the rank of Chief Electrician's Mate. Following discharge, he attended Anderson College with his wife Catherine. During World War II, he served as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the Pacific Theater on the islands of Kwajalein and Guam. After the war, he earned three degrees from Michigan State University.i) Beginning as a history teacher, he moved up to principal and then to school superintendent in Lowell, MI through the 1970s and retired from Muskegon Oakridge. Early in his career he met and married Evelyn Bennett, who came with two children. Len and Evelyn soon bore a daughter. In the years as they raised their family Leonard served as a lay leader at his church, particularly the First Congregational Church of Lowell. In retirement Leonard migrated between Lowell and Florida.  After the death of Evelyn, Leonard met and married Wilma Gerred.
