What followed was a period of prolific literary accomplishment. Butler wrote several collections of stories, Tabloid Dreams , A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain , which won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and Had a Good Time , based on his collection of antique picture post cards (Grove Press, August 2004). His father, Robert Olen Sr., is a retired actor and former chairman of the theater department at Saint Louis University. His mother, Lucille Hall Butler, is a retired executive secretary, and her stories about Granite City during the Depression were the inspiration for his fifth novel, Wabash (1987).\n \tPlanning to major in theatre, Butler enrolled at Northwestern University in 1963. During his freshman year, he starred in four of the school's six major productions, but in his sophomore year, he concentrated his studies in oral interpretation and playwriting. He graduated with a B.S. He was trained as a linguist and assigned in January 1971 to a counterintelligence unit in Vietnam. Within six months he was chosen to be the administrative assistant and interpreter for the American Foreign Service officer advising the mayor of Saigon. His experience in Vietnam was a strong influence in his novels. Butler left Vietnam in December 1971, and later stated in an interview in People Magazine that he was \"filled with the same sense of nostalgia, loss, and even aspiration that the Vietnamese in my stories feel.\"\n \tIn the early 1970s, Butler moved to New York City and became a reporter, and later editor, of Electronic News , owned by Fairchild Productions. From 1975 to 1985 he was editor in chief of Energy User News , a weekly investigative business newspaper.\n \tButler began preparing himself for a writing career in 1979 by attending four consecutive semesters of advanced creative-writing courses taught by Anatole Broyard, an African-American writer and literary critic of the New York Times , at the New School for Social Research.
