So he decided to wait until he was drafted in order to serve which occurred on September 10, 1942, and assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps. Haggerty then attended basic training and instructed in airplane mechanics. He moved through several training camps and military bases in the process, including: Columbia SC, St. Petersburg and Clearwater FL, Gulfport MS, Patterson, NJ, Salt Lake City UT, Dyersburg TN, Wendover UT, Fairmont and Lincoln NE, Memphis TN and finally Morrison Field in West Palm Beach FL. at Dyersburg, Haggerty became acquainted with the mechanics of the B-17's and later the B-24's.  Later at Fairmont,  he finally would be assigned as crew chief to the B-24 numbered 636, on the 726th Squadron of the 451st Bomb Group.\n One notable incident Haggerty recounts is that, at one point in Fairmont, while the air crew was practicing maneuvers. The 636 was flown twice by a different team who reported excessive oil pressure on the aircraft's four engines, which forced Haggerty to lower it; despite good reports from Sidney Winski, the 636's usual pilot. After the decrease in oil pressure the aircraft experienced failures in a series of flights in which one or more propellers failed. The most severe of these occurred during a flight between West Palm Beach and Trinidad, in which Haggerty was on board. There, the sudden stop of three of the four propellers in midair forced them to make an emergency landing in the isle of Saint Lucia. Haggerty would later blame the failure of the engines on the low oil pressure which he finally fixed once the crew got to Brazil. Because of this incident, the crew renamed their plane \"Three Feathers.\"\n Haggerty continued flying aboard \"Three Feathers\" as it took the Southern route on the way to Europe, making stops at Saint Lucia (forcefully), Trinidad, Belem and Natal in Brazil, Dakar in Senegal, Marrakech in Morocco and Telergma in Algeria until finally reaching Italy by the end of 1943. They remained stationed there until June 1945, first in the air base at Gioia de Colle and later in the one at Castelluccio dei Sauri both in the region of Apulia. He brought his expertise in fundraising to Florida State, serving as a founding member of the Seminole Boosters Board of Directors during the 1970s and in six terms as the FSU Foundation chair. Among his greater contributions to the school was his work in the 1970s as executive of Seminole Boosters, helping save the football program from debt and playing an influential role in hiring coach Bobby Bowden. In recognition of his work, Langford received many awards from the university, as well as the naming of the Langford Green in 2000, a grassy area outside of Doak Campbell Stadium, in his honor. Additionally, he created the George R. Langford Eminent Scholars Chair in Classics through his donation to the department. As of 2017, he remained an active member of the Florida State University Community, despite his age. His children are also very involved in Florida State and the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience. George Langford passed at age 95 on January 3, 2019. She grew up during the Great Depression between the homes of her mother, her grandparents, and finally, her father, in Portland, Oregon. She married her high school boyfriend after graduation, though the two eventually separated before Jackie joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1942, which later became the Women's Army Corps (WAC). She joined the army with the intention of serving, earning money, and eventually going home to go to school.\n Jackie went to basic training at Fort De Moines, Iowa, in January 1943. She then attended Army Administration school in Conway, Arkansas, to learn to how to serve as a non-commissioned officer (NCO). She became a First Sergeant and went on to teach a cadre of women recruits at the WAC Basic Training Center in Monticello, Arkansas. She later served at an Army Air Corps base in Selma, Alabama, where she turned down the opportunity to become an officer in favor of serving overseas.\n She took the French cruise ship Ile de France across the Atlantic and was stationed in Salisbury, England. She worked as secretary to the Base Commander and worked on paperwork in preparation for D-Day. On Christmas Eve 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge, Jackie and seven of her WACs flew to Paris, France, to work at General Eisenhower's Headquarters. She served as private secretary to General Robert A. McClure, the head of the Army Psychological Warfare Division. The role of this Division was to develop propaganda pamphlets to drop on the German people to convince them to surrender. The Division would also send jeeps close to the front lines with microphones and speakers calling for the Germans to surrender.\n Jackie lived and worked in Paris, dating enlisted officers and touring the city. As a First Sergeant, she actually made more money than the enlisted soldiers she dated, earning $120 per month. Jackie anticipated V-E Day in May 1945 because of the correspondences in General McClure's office and participated in the Parisian celebration. In June 1945, Jackie moved with General McClure and the Psychological Warfare Division to General Eisenhower's new headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. They were renamed the Information Control Division and developed pamphlets about concentration camps to drop on and inform the German population of what their country did. She traveled with the general to the other Information Control Division offices in Berlin, Brussels, The Hague, Copenhagen, and Oslo.\n Jackie eventually received her orders to go home to the United States because General McClure was going home. She sailed to New York on the Queen Mary, discharged, and flew home to California. Later, she went to Dayton, Ohio, to meet Jim Voelkl, a soldier with whom she had corresponded throughout the war. He proposed and they married in February 1946. They had a son and a daughter. Jackie believed that serving in the Army made her an independent person, and she dedicated the rest of her life to serving US veterans. She was a Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and participated in World War II remembrance ceremonies in France. She died June 8, 2014, at the age of 92.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","Entered 01/30/2017","The Jackie Voelkl manuscript contains one folder with a 44-page typed transcript of an oral history interview.  Jackie Voelkl served as a First Sergeant in the Women's Army Corps from 1942 to 1946.
