After joining the Army Air Corps in 1941, Cardwell trained in Biloxi, Montgomery, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee. He began his active duty as a fighter pilot in the 5th Air Force in October of 1942 and was stationed in Australia and Port Moresby in New Guinea. Cardwell was discharged on November 17, 1945, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1949, Cardwell began teaching as a professor of architecture at the University of California. He self-published the memoir of his service in 1988 and later became the president of the Berkeley Historical Society in 1997. Professor Emeritus Kenneth H. Cardwell passed away on January 11, 2010.
